Better to use floor mats with big spikes underneath like the 3M Premium car mats. Yung 3M Classic konti lang spikes.

I personally had an experience with this. I bought my camry 3.5q very slightly used about a year ago. No problems initially until i had my friend drive it over to my place from the office. He called me up to say that the car suddenly accelerated and he almost had a collision. I was surprised to hear this and was really worried if somethings wrong with the car. Eventually he called up again ksi pinagaralan nya what went wrong. He took a close look at the accelarator pedal and concluded that it could be very possible that the floor mat jammed the pedal preventing it from going back to its rest position. Ako mismo had an experienced regarding the floor mats. But since i had prior knowledge, i always kept in mind that it could always happen again. And indeed it did! I was cruising comfortably one day when after i took my feet of the gas pedal the car kept running!! Instinctively, i immediately shifted the gear from D to N to disengage the gear and so be able to stop the car. Yes my friend was right, the mattings did jammed the pedal. The floor mattings of the camry is not really a cheap one. in fact i like it. But the problems is it slides towards the pedals thus causing it to sometimes block or jam the pedals. There are no other problems i think that causes the car to accelerate or not stop except for that mattings.

Oh it's because of free mattings that came up with Brand New Camry.
Get the floormat but immediately buy a better one like 3M for the driver's area to replace the free mat.

Happens also to my Starex, from then on, I always remind myself to properly align my carpet.

It would be better if you could cut the matting below the accelerator pedal, also to maximise the space under the pedal when flooring the pedal (e.g. expressway driving) and to prevent this situation.

Got these pics from another forum. It shows how just 1cm of floor mat movement could mean a difference to safety. These are from a Lexus.

The defect also probably lies with the way the accelerator pedal travels. The pedal geometry allows it to go down too much towards the floor and practically touching it. Given the right conditions, it is possible that even the coarse fabric of a 3M floor mat could still potentially trap the accelerator pedal.

Toyota/Lexus should either design a shorter accelerator pedal or change its geometry such that it is still about one or two inches away from the floor when the pedal is at its lowest position.

so it all happened because of a wrong pedal and mat design. thanks oj88, i thought the problem only lies with the mat and it made me wonder why the need for recall.

    note:

driver's mat should also be tied by the seat posts to avoid slipping forward.
