    based on my personal experience.

    small engines are good if the car is on standstill

    but 0-something (which normally happens during traffic) it uses more fuel compared to bigger engines with better torque

    The small engines paired with a cvt has decent fuel consumption. Small engines with 4sp torque converters drink a lot because of tall gearing.

    Toyota also replaced the engine (1NR-FE, Dual VVT-i) which may have affected the car's fuel consumption
