Hi Isabela, welcome to Tsikot and to Suzuki APV Thread.. regarding your question... I am first curious why are you shifting from 5th gear to 4th? if you can answer some or all of my questions below so we can trace the sound that you are talking about.
1. Are you shifting from 5th Gear to 4th gear due to slower speed, thus the downshift?
2. Are you downshifting because you are doing an "engine break"
3. What is your "RPM" when down shifting from 5th Gear to 4th Gear.
lastly.. is the sound where you are "grinding" the gears?
Thanks.

Thanks for the quick reply. You have been very consistent in responding to my inquiries. Please see my response in green fonts.
I was moving fast but I need to slow down on a curve.
2. Are you downshifting because you are doing an "engine break" I wanted to put the transmission down into a lower gear (I need to slow the vehicle down). I applied a "regular" amount of break to slow it down and I stamped on the clutch prior to shifting the gears.
3. What is your "RPM" when down shifting from 5th Gear to 4th Gear. RPM was between 70-80.
lastly.. is the sound where you are "grinding" the gears? You are correct. It more grinding than crackling. Would that cause an adverse effect on the transmission? Thanks
Thanks.
Oliver
Thanks!

honestly -- from your answers I feel that your driving style is a bit off.. because on these aspects.
1. -- if you need to go slow on the curve.. you don't need to downshift or do a "engine break" if you know that you need to slow down on a curve.. free-wheel so you will slow down normally.. if un-estimated well.. then use break to slow down.. you don't need to down shift.
2. -- same issue if you want to slow the vehicle down.. a 'downshift' is not the proper manner.. but you just need to 'free wheel' so you can slow down, to a slower speed.. or even to a stoplight. then if going to speed up again... it will depend on your current running speed.. example is if you are running around 60kph and above.. so im estimating you're at 4th to 5th gear.. obviously.. you cannot shift to 3rd gear.. because it is quite fast for that gear. thus the grinding.
3. 70 to 80? is this your RPM? or Speed? RPM is can be seen on your cluster as 1-2-3-4-5-6 (x1000) so RPM starts from 1000 most of the time.. engine on idle is always around 400 to 1200 rpm. (depending on the engine or its health)
if the"70 to 80" is your KPH.. then if you are "downshifting" from 5th gear to 4th gear.. it will definitely make that noise.. because your engine RPM (revolutions per minute) will jump higher because if you are on 4th gear.. your engine RPM will be around 5000 and above which is already high for the engine. thus you will have a hard time downshifting.

March 30th, 2013 02:08 AM #1544Hi Oli,
Not a problem. Thanks you for being honest with me. I believe I need to work on my driving skills. I had this mixed up bet RPM and KPH. I mean those bold numbers on ODO, these are measured in KPH right? I stand corrected. So between 70-80 KPH. I was moving fast from the Super Highway on my way to the Toll Gate. Thanks for the tip.
Best Regards!

sorry for the late reply, i had trouble logging in to my account,
if you are using a MANUAL tranny under normal driving conditions, there is no need to downshift if you need to slow down, all you need to do is apply the brakes while the transmission is engage regardless of what gear it is in (remember no need to change gear).
there is no need to put your gear in neutral (putting it in neutral would only make your vehicle faster and would heat up and stress your brakes more. If the tranny is engage in whatever gear it is in it would greatly help the breaking system to slow down the vehicle)
when to shift to a lower gear gear -> in my opinion, you only need to shift to a lower gear in two instances:
1st under normal driving operation when the car seems to choke or slows down(as if the car is asking you to shift to a lower gear)
2nd under emergency operation only, that is when you lose your breaks, you need first to shift to a lower gear then gently apply the parking brakes, doing the opposite would make your vehicle swirl (ala rally car style but since where talking about the apv here it would roll over instead of swriling)
IN AUTOMATIC transmission it's a different story, you can put it in l or d or 2 whenever the hell you want (APV manual eg. going downhill and your to fast you may immediately put it in l)
- only applies to apv
different scenario for different vehicles brands and models

April 5th, 2013 06:44 PM #1547Replaced my Axle Oil but im not sure if SAE140 is the correct fluid. I just based it from my Vitara manual.
Can anyone confirm if 140 is OK, or it should be 90? I noticed AT axle is different from MT.
Thanks

Anyone have an APV GA?
I was wondering if the 2nd and 3rd row could be folded flat. I find it stupid that the 2nd row can tumble cuz you can't fold the 3rd row flat anyway, so your cargo space is really limited to the area between the 3rd row and rear hatch.

hi sir jut703 -- I have a Suzuki GA.. unfortunately the 2nd and 3rd row seats cannot be folded flat. tumbled lang tapos awkward nga pang pareho na i tupi.. parang no use siya if you are planning to put a big load that needed the whole rear space.
but you can have the 2nd row have its 'Sandalan' na naka higa.. then you have the full space of that rear part. ilalagay lang yung load sa ibabaw ng seats.
Otoh, the 2nd gen mu-x slightly looks like a mazda up front and some interior bits as well but oto...
