^Yun nga sinasabi ko bro, most people will be served fine by a 2x10 setup that suits their riding style (for you mukhang bagay yung 36-22 since puro trails ka).

A 3x10 is more of an all-rounder with overlapping and unecessary gears. For your riding, you wouldn't need the 42T chainring. Conversely, another guy who barely climbs long, steep uphills but has a lot of long rides will probably need that 42T big ring but not the 22T granny. But both your styles will be served by a 3x10, unlike with a 2x10 where he'll need 2 different chainrings from what you'll need.

Finally replaced my broken shifter, and this marks my first ever upgrade:

Hopefully I can still stay true to my mantra - "if it ain't broke, don't buy a new one" [emoji23]

Quite a noticeable difference between the XT (M780) and SLX (M660) shifters. I guess I psyched myself a bit, but I really did feel more solid shifting with the XT. Downshifts are especially smooth, and I like that I can downshift 2 gears with just one long press (unlike with the SLX where I need to press the shifter twice for 2 downshifts).

SLX can't downshift 2 gears in one press? I didnt know that! My old LX 8spd down shift 2 gears at a time. Shimano retrogressed?

Ok ,I just checked, my LX 8spd CAN downshift 3 gears at a time. Isnt yours defective/broken?

Can't imagine shimano going to one gear/one press shifting. Used to have non series 8spd shifters and even they downshift 2 at a time. Can't check though if it can dwnshift 3, it's off my bike now.
Replaced that with SRAM X-9 9spd. What they say is true about SRAM, it's shifting is spot on and crisp.

Good for you then. Even the current SLX (M670) isn't marketed as a multi-shift shifter.

Now I get it, your understanding of downshift is going to smaller cassettes. While the action is true(from big to small cassettes) its the opposite when you say downshift.

Quite confusing also when they say "pushing a big gear" when you're on the smallest cog.

So, my old LX can't shift 2 cogs at a time from big to small cogs.
New tech then for XT/XTR na pala.

No, I mean from say, an 11T gear to a 13T gear. It goes from a smaller cog (since smaller is actually a higher gear) to a bigger cog.

With my SLX (and all other Rapidfire shifters I've tried), I have to push the shifter twice to downshift twice. With the XT, just one push of the shifter allows you to downshift twice (as in from 11T you can skip 13T and go straight to 15T with just one click).

Ok bro, now we're on the same page. But you mean you get two cogs with one click? Di ba one click per cog, pero when you push the lever far enough you get up to 3 cogs and you still get 3 clicks.
With 10spd XT, you could get up to 4 clicks in one push. And you could up shift 2 at a time (big to small)

Interesting. I tried it now with my disconnected SLX and indeed it can do 3 clicks on one full stroke. Never got to try it before though when it was still connected to the bike, laging one click lang.

But now with the XT, I can only downshift consistently 2 gears. I did 3 clicks unintentionally last night but it wasn't enough to complete 3 downshifts - it went 3 gears down at first but then went then 1 gear up . I tried just now with the bike stationary, and it did 4 clicks but the 4th click took a lot of effort.

Have your chain length checked bro, a short chain would make downshifts stiff. Otherwise I'd say the shifter throw is long, thus requiring much effort.
