Call centers looking for 'right applicants' to fill growing vacancies

The country's more than 70 call centers are looking for the right applicants to fill up the growing vacancies for their expansion plans in the country.

The Philippine call centers posted an average growth of 50 to 60 percent annually and the problem of applicants becomes a bigger problem for their expansion plans, says Dan Reyes president of Business Process Association of the Philippines and country manager of ClientLogic, one of the country's five call centers.

He said that one of their solutions is to tie up with the country's different universities, tesda and other technical schools to come up with the right candidates.

"It is not only that they can speak the right English but that they can understand what they say," Reyes said who announced his firm's plan of adding 600 more seats from their current 2,500 seats. He said his firm would need an additional investment of $12 million for this including a call center building for their own use.

He explained that out of every 100 applicants, only three to five percent are hired.

""The industry is growing faster than the available qualified candidates,' Reyes said, hence the need to tie up with univerisies. Their target is to get 300 trainees monthly.

Reyes said professionals like doctors, nurses, engineers and others are taking up part time jobs in call centers because of the high pay.

Call centers are seen to grow to 80,000 at the end of the year from the current 70,000 seats.

For the business process office, it is seen to grow by at least 150,000 year.

Reyes said that investment in the call centers now chalk up revenues of $1 billion annually and investment per seat in the call center ranges from $5,000 to $7,000.

Client Logic operates two centers. Most of its clients are in the Fortune 500 of the United States.

Reyes said that the growth of the industry will continue for the next few years because of the country's competitive advantage. However, the supply is one big concern, Reyes noted.
