Webb et al lawyers up in arms vs Alfaro

MANILA, Philippines - The lawyers of the acquitted in the Vizconde massacre case called for a press conference Saturday afternoon.

Initially, the media was informed that it was just a reunion of sorts for lawyers Rene Saguisag, Vitaliano Aguirre, Jose Flaminiano, Ricardo Valmonte and others.

Later, the lawyers announced they will soon be charging Jessica Alfaro with false testimony.

They are the lawyers of the main suspects in the 1991 murder case, who were acquitted by the Supreme Court on Tuesday over the “inherent inconsistencies” in the testimony of witness Alfaro.

They will also be filing administrative cases against members of the National Bureau of Investigation, and public and private prosecutors for allegedly attempting to fabricate evidence against Hubert Webb and the others.

They are basing their complaint against a confidential report received by Flaminiano several years ago, which was written by Col. Armando Gatmaitan. The latter was then the intelligence chief of the criminal investigation services of the Philippine National Police who did an independent investigation of the massacre case.

The lawyers supposedly confronted Gatmaitan over the letter.

He confirmed he wrote the letter back in 1995 after the Vizcondes asked him to do a separate investigation.

He claimed his nephew, Mar Gatmaitan, was the surrogate father of the Vizconde children.

It was through Mar that he met the Vizconde patriarch, Lauro.

In his report, Gatmaitan said there was an incident where Alfaro was brought to the crime scene for a “familiarization tour” before she gave a sworn statement, helping her fabricate her testimony.

He also claimed certain prosecutors and NBI agents coached the witnesses to support the case.

Since the Vizconde case has been judged with finality, this would be the best time to file a false testimony case against Alfaro, Saguisag said.

The lawyers have not revealed the names of the possible respondents, noting only they are still studying the case further.

Gatmaitan, for his part, said he does not care if people might think his statement is mere hearsay. He said he just wants to tell the truth.
