First, it's not a VR4... the real VR4 is a 4 wheel drive Galant with a turbo engine. ;)
I'd avoid the a/t tranny version as sirain yung a/t sa mga model year na yan ('94-'97 Galant).
The white smoke could mean the head gaskets or piston rings need replacement (overhaul); also means the owner didnt take care of the car much. Does it come out constantly or only when the engine is cold?
On the engine noise, you'll have to really get down to what side its coming from as there are a good number of possibilities like bearings, belts, busted mounts, loose bolts, out-of-spec valves, etc...

Pumipitik = shift shock = damaged tranny. Wag na lang. You'll end up paying a lot for repairs.

with my brother's Galant a/t, the tranny just died some morning when he was going to the office. Repair costs almost the reselling value of the car.

I'd definitely look at a VR V6 model Galant m/t over the 2.0 4cylinder Super Saloon.
Glennster is selling his also right now AFAIK (kung di pa nabebenta).
One can only hope.
Cheaper brands than Motolite but reliable as well
