Hi Monty owners, back reading a bit, it seems earlier models are being discussed. But may I know if anyone has feedback on Montero maybe 2020 to 2022 ? Thinking of getting one but just wanted to know reliability ( like Fortuner is most probably reliable ). Any thoughts welcome.. thanks
*reliability is most important factor for me know when deciding ksi

But when on paper, Montero seems like the most value for money

    i agree.
when it comes to reliability, real or perception,
    it's toyota, hands down.

but you should test-drive, sir, to determine where you feel better, when driving or riding.

    true storey.
a relative had a fortuner and a montero.
one day, he decided to sell the fort, even as it wasn't giving him problems.
a few months later, hindi niya ma-start si monty. "electronics issues."
he lost a shining coin, to have it fixed.

    kuwento sakin nang isang nakaka-alam,
toyota will keep using a part, even if it's already old, until a better one comes along.
multiply that with the thousands of odd parts that make a car,
and we begin to see why toyota are very reliable.

    por ejemplo,
in the infomercial interview, the designer said that the old innova and the new innova use essentially the same front suspension/steering.

apologies for sounding like a toyota spokesman.
    i'm... not.
    heh heh.

    Thanks doc for sharing that.

Yes I'm scheduled for a monty test drive. Toyota however (at least those dealers i called) don't have test drive units.

Decision is just between the Monty GLS or Fort G AT (cheapest automatic .
Tho without a test drive I wouldn't know whether the 2.4G fortuner is underpowered topping up at only 150hp.

Hehe sorry this is a monty thread.

In any case, what is going for the Montero is that Mitsubishi gives a 100K discount right off the bat.

I don't think you'd find the 2.4G Fortuner wanting in the power category. Brother the same generation Fortuner G but in the first release of the "new gen" where it was still drum brakes in the rear. It should now come with disc brakes all around just a year after he bought his.

Interior volume should be "larger" than the Montero inside, but you wouldn't feel it much because Montero has thinner seat foams compared to the Fortuner so it "offsets" to a certain degree. Thicker foam of the Fortuner doesn't necessarily mean "better" comfort. I still prefer the Montero's thinner foam for long trips compared to the Fortuner, but this is a personal preference of me and my parents.

Montero has better turning radius for tighter spaces and it's manual mode to override shifting is more "responsive"/quicker than the Fortuner's. There is a bigger delay for up/down shift of the Fortuner but you can easily compensate for it by shifting up/down earlier on the Fortuner which you can adjust for once you are more used to it's behavior.

Both of these should have easy access for OEM parts like Kayaba Suspension down the line if you need to replace them for a more cost competitive price outside warranty period. Case in point, for our previous generation Montero, we used the KYB rear shock absorbers instead of Mitsubishi ones and the price difference is around half. Just to cite an example.

Depends really on what's higher up on your priorities but if resale and parts convenience is really #1 and #2, then the Fortuner will tick all those boxes without question way better than the Montero could. A 100k price difference/discount on the Montero won't really be able to offset that "feeling of regret" in the future and nagging you'd tell yourself/you'll hear from someone else.

But, if what others in your personal circle tell you don't really have any weight over your current priorities, then (like I said), you can't go wrong with either choices.

naayos na ba ang infamous tagtag syndrome ng fortuner sa 2nd to 3rd row seats? iyan iyong pinaka discouraging factor dati nung nasa market kami for a suv.

I can only speak and compare previous gen with the first release of current gen Fortuner. It is "better" but still not even close to first gen Montero. Terra would still have better ride comfort compared to those two. No frame of reference for the Mux though.

I am still personally salty about the quality of the foam of Toyota in general for the asking price of their car(s). For me, they personally scrimped on it. It goes the same with the previous generation Camry vs the Sylphy. Camry owner complained backseat of Camry had "bad cushion" and was surprised how "better" the Sylphy's (standard foam, not Zero G) was in comparison. So, there is some very noticeable cost cutting when it comes to what you "feel". But they did spend on what you "see". My thoughts on the matter.

EDIT: Re tagtag of Fortuner being mentioned, specifically is the bouncy-ness when going over bumps/potholes. The shock absorption seems to be insufficient even when the tires are properly inflated (not overinflated). The only way we ended up with reduced "ride comfort" of previous generation Montero was when we slapped on the current gen Montero rims which increased the rim diameter and reduced the height of rubber sidewall of tires. It improved handling and reduced lean during turns at speed, but translated the bumps more to the interior. We could no longer go back the original rims because we sold it after buying the current generation Montero rims with new rubbers from an owner who upgraded the rims & tires. Cost for rims and rubber we got from that owner was 30k for the whole set. Way below the price of 4 new tires for the Montero. Hehe!

Previous gen TOTL Montero had similar size to the current gen Base Model and Mid Variant if memory serves me right. I think (correct me if I am wrong), the tuning of the TOTL Previous gen Montero was slightly different to compensate for lesser sidewall height and larger rims.

Test drove the Montero during the weekend. Nice ride, comfortable seating. Took a look at the Fortuner G AT as well. There were a lot of plastics and urethane.

Just my personal opinion, my old 2010 Fortuner G felt more premium than the new 2022 G

Although reliability was really number 1 on my list.. it seems with the Fort, that is all you get.

*a bit disappointed, was really leaning towards Toyota #nowunsure

This is why I personally feel Toyota PH focuses more on what you can "see", instead of feel (comfort and touch being the main issues I really have with it). Even the Raize 1.0G TOTL, I get that it is a budget oriented model, but once that model's TOTL breached 1m php, it didn't make sense for the steering wheel to be kept with similar materials making it out of hard material with no "give" as if it were a Utility Budget Vehicle. The "feeling" has been off for me when it comes to Toyota's for a while now.

Okay, now I'm kind of leaning towards Montero. Tamang tama pala this thread hehe, "Issues for the Montero Sport".

There are a lot of electronic stuff like the electronic parking brake (w/ auto hold which I learned allows car to stop or go); all those things controlled from the steering wheel; etc.

    Anyone encounter problems with these?

I am old school kasi hehe.. so my mindset is the more electronics in the car the more chance of issues?
(or do these worries have no basis, and do not really affect reliability of the car)
