Is this an overheating transmission issue?

    6 liters ang ATF?

Alam ko 5 liters lang dapat yan...

    Transmission finally did not cooperate.

Just used it today normally then when i got home, it wouldn't shift into reverse. Physically wont allow you to push the AT Lever past N. It will still shift to D or go to manual mode.

Never encountered the solenoid issue where the transmission on dash would flicker so didnt expect this to just suddenly happen.

If dun lang sa release sa AT lever yung issue, great. No idea yet. Dadalhin na lang sa mitsubishi kasi wala akong katiwalang mekaniko for transmission issues.

Update: Problem solved. No issue with inhibitor switch. Just a piece of plastic inside the Gear Lever, dimension maybe around 3" with a diameter of 1cm (approx)

Sleeve, Gearshift Lever Part # 2410A013 bought from Mitsubishi Parts 156php only. Changing it out took less than 5 mins. They didn't even bother to charge me service fee for the car. Brought it home immediately after.

how were you able to trouble-shoot it so easily?

Not really me/us. It was a guess that the issue was solely inside the gear lever but when i told the SA at mitsubishi the issue, he asked me to see the car and after he tried it himself he just grabbed the screwdriver, and removed the top half of the gear lever, revealing that piece of plastic (sleeve) and it was indeed broken.
Not sure if the issue is common or 'expected'.
The SA told me i could buy a backup piece (extra) should it happen again as it really is easy to diy.

I recall reports of shift issues here more were connected to inhibitor switch and the dash light for what gear you are in blinking or being intermittent.

I hadnt come across someone reporting a sleeve issue causing the shifting issue or i might have missed it.

So i just put in the part number here for someone using similar model year here.

Was able to breath a sigh of relief when the SA told me no concern with inhibitor and just the sleeve.

At least wala need ibaba na transmission. Using the car, there were no signs of mechanical issues with the actual clutch/transmission (no shuddering and it was performing as expected). Kaya gulat ako bigla ayaw pumasok from N to R sakto paguwi ko.

But given the sleeve and how it is designed. Swerte nga nasira siya after i already backed out and drove home from my destination. Kung nabasag yung sleeve when i parked then and there, i dont think it will allow me to shift to R from P as well.

It's a common issue enough. You can see youtube videos on how to replace it. Some replace it with steel tubing for more durability. Another diy option is to use a ballpen in case no part is available. I haven't encountered the problem but i have 2 spares just in case.

Thanks for this info. I need to change my sleeve also. Medyo may pag ka brittle na rin but no issues so far.

Also, the "old" 4D56 is still reliable as ever. Took the Monty out of town recently and it still performed well. Good diesel consumption with hardly any black smoke.

i googled just now, and i immediately saw it.

    i suppose,
mitsubishi didn't bother to have it upgraded, as it was so very easy to fix...
    if one knew about it.
    heeh heh.

I honestly didn't know what to call that "piece" or part. We used to only own MT cars so we've never really owned AT cars (previously) for 10 years or more yet. At present, we do have 3 vehicles that are at least 10 years old and have a AT/CVT. 2 of them have the shift release button to "disengage" shift lock, 1 is gated so it doesn't have the release button. This is the first instance where the shift lock wasn't able to disengage.

Luckily towing was still free under insurance, part is cheap. So the "lesson" about it was cheap enough where it is more of the time invested being there to learn about it. I'd say worth it for future AT Cars DIY maintenance to check.

On another note, the original broken piece, I dropped it and it split into 2 again. So yeah, the stress cracks do come out due to age for the Sleeve.

    To 111prez:

yeah, car is really mechanically sound even now, but we have only clocked around 85k kms in the odo. I have to actively choose to use it instead of a sedan. I'm more frequently choosing to opt to use the manual mode when trying to accelerate out of a U turn slot, plus doesn't make the drive as boring for a regular commute. Already changed out the rear shocks with KYB instead of mitsu branded ones. Using Unioil for the better part of 6 years I think on this vehicle, and haven't really encountered the black smoke issue anymore. I used to have it when I used Petron Euro 2 Diesel. But now, there hasn't been an instance of it happening. I have tried to sometimes (not frequent) to do hard acceleration bursts to push out any gunk/soot in the muffler/exhaust. So far, really only mid grey colored cloud (at best) came out. No redlining, just short bursts of rpm from idle to 3k-3.5k rpm.

this is probably what someone refered to, as mitsubishi AT failure record.
    heh heh.

    years ago,
a relative's everest with AT refused to move.
    called the towtruck.
when the towtruck driver arrived, he listened to the owner.
then he crawled under the eve, made kutingting for a few seconds, then crawled out.
    "ok na po."
apparently, a coupler or something underneath, was known for getting deranged.
all the guy did was to re-move it back into place.
