The forecast for Manila International calls for thunderstorms over the airfield. But, with the wind flow coming from the north and northeast, it's a bit drier. I imagine, if the sea breeze and lake breeze (from Laguna de Bay) sets up with the accompanying wind direction shifts, then thunderstorms will be likely since the wind flows will converge right over Manila.
I'm still convinced there won't be thunderstorms over Manila today. But, I'm not an expert over there and more than likely, I'll be wrong. But, it's still a good exercise of the rules of thumb I use. I'll check observations from RPLL later and see what factors I missed.
Add: I already missed one factor..... I didn't realize how narrow the Philippines is near Manila. The east coast of the Philippines should see enhanced thunderstorm formation with both gradient wind flow and the sea breeze coming from the same direction. So, some thunderstorms that develop over the Philippine east coast east of Manila may cross over terrain into Manila itself.
Add: For the west coast of Luzon, it should be nice so long as the northerly/northeasterly wind flow continues.Last edited by Jun aka Pekto; June 19th, 2008 at 08:35 AM.

RPLL is the international 4-letter identifier for Ninoy Aquino International Airport. This is a list of observations taken by the weather folks at that airport arranged from the latest to the earliest. Times are in zulu. To get local time, I think it's add 8 hours. So, 1000Z would be 1800 local time or 6 pm.
It looks like the winds were from the north until 03Z/11AM when it shifted to a direction of 280, almost from due west. That's the sea breeze right there. Moisture would've been increasing from the west which coupled with the hot temperatures would've resulted in increasing clouds. 3 hours later, the observer at NAIA was carrying CB remarks on the observation. CB is short for cumulonimbus which are thunderstorm-producing clouds.
I guess it doesn't take much atmospheric dynamics for thnderstorms to occur over there.

kaya umiinit ngayon ay dahil sa...
anyways, with regards to the lightning storms, ye it's caused by global warming because it creates more storms thus increasing the ionic disturbance of the athmosphere.Damn, son! Where'd you find this?

Naalala ko dati bago lumindol ng July 16 1990, anglalakas ng thunderstorms a few days prior to the earthquake.
Halos everyday at around 2 to 3PM for 1.5 weeks ata uulan then anglalakas nd kidlat at mababa pa ung altitude ng occurrence.
Pagkatapos ng earhtquake, may nakapansin na nawala na ung mga thunderstorms. may nabasa ako noon sa People's Journal na ung Thunderstorms prior to the earthquake were related as the grinding tectonic plates generate charges daw that cause the lightning.
Nabasa ko lang yon ha. Don't quote me on that.
