I had a random thought earlier, why do people blur out their plates in photos they post online?

It's quite apparent in international car forums, as well as here in Tsikot. Apparently, I'm not the only one wondering about it, and it has actually been discussed in Jalopnik: Should You Bother Obscuring Your License Plates In Photos?

On one side of the fence, they say it's okay since everyone sees your plates when you're on the road anyway. Others are far more cautious though - the main reason people blur them out is because they fear that someone will get hold of their personal details from their plates. Probably true for a country with a centralized online repository like the DMV in the US, but I wonder if this applies to us locally?

Is it really possible to find out who owns the car and where he/she lives by getting their PH plate? Does the LTO divulge this info to the average Juan upon request?

I ask because I previously also altered my plates before posting online, but recently I thought, por que?

How about you guys, sa tingin niyo ba't pa kailangan i-blur out plates niyo?

It's better to err on the side of caution.

Depende kung may kaaway ka sa forum or me nayayabangan sayo. He could trace your identity and location. Madami kasi sa atin ang matapang kasi nasa likod ng keyboard.

For the right amount anybody can ask someone inside lto for certain information.

yes, its possible. read this article from topgear...

Find out a vehicle's details by texting its plate number to LTO service - Tip Sheet

in relation to this, it is not only posting online that some people are trying to blur their plates. some are fond of smoking their plates glass casings so dark beyond recognition. i noticed some in edsa traffic, you can't barely even read the plate numbers in front of you. siguro ang purpose para hindi makilala kapag nag hit-and-run

Those dark tinted plates are downright illegal. They should be apprehended but authorities are not doing anything. Also include those tilted plate holders.
