Dear Guys:
Here's part 2 of my post on new developments.
As you all know, the father of my classmate and friend, Dean Roger Supan of Mapua, died last year.
He drove a blue Isuzu Trooper with a 3.0 liter turbocharged, 4JGxx diesel engine.
We noticed that it had become smokey (black smoke) and thought this was due to calibration or nozzle problems.
But when we dismantled the intake and exhaust system, we discovered that a nut had fallen into the mouth of the turbo's compressor and had demolished all the blades there - BLADE SALAD!
Asking around for a second-hand turbo, we found the going rate around Php 25K to 30K!
Outrageous! - A 2nd-hand engine complete with transmission would only cost Php 70K!
After discussing this, the brothers decided to get a 2nd hand engine.
They lucked out and found a good one (sariwa pa!), crisp running responsive and not at all smokey - black or gray - fuel or oil smoke.
The automatic transmission was less than satisfactory and they eventually were able to swap it with a better one.
The turbo-and-injection tuning developments came about because of this engine swap.
Although it ran beautifully, even after install the engine's performance was not really to our liking (kulang pre').
Having finished reading the Robert Bosch VE injection pump manual, I recognized that the Zexel pump on the Isuzu diesel engine was almost exactly the same as a Bosch pump.
It also had a mushroom-shaped diaphragm on top (also called a 'smoke limiter') - which is used to match the fuel injection to the turbo's boost.
I found on the Land Rover TDi website a set of very detailed instructions on how to adjust the Bosch VE's injection pump controls to get more power with the turbocharger.
We decided to practice the technique on the injection pump of the old engine and then try it out on the newer engine.
Step 1) we adjusted the enrichment screw and increased the entire delivery curve to the point where the engine was just emitting a slight dark haze - then backed off slightly.
Step 2) opened the top of the 'mushroom' and marked the position of the diaphragm, then took it out and removed the plastic washer on the bottom that limits maximum travel.
Step 3) lubricated all the parts inside with silicone lube (instead of WD-40 because of the rubber parts inside) so that everything moved smoothly.
Step 4) adjusted the 'starwheel' to lessen the tension of the spring vs the incoming boost - making the system more responsive to rapid changes in load.
Step 5) installed a boost gauge and measured actual boost delivered by the turbo (spec is 1.0 atm or 15 psig) found that it was only giving out 7-8 psig and shimmed the diaphragm of the wastegate to get the required boost.
Result - just amazing! Like a different beast altogether, delivery and boost are now well matched and the whole 2.5 ton beast responds very quickly to the gas pedal.
Although its about tuning an Isuzu Trooper with Land Rover TDi techniques I posted this because now - kaya na namin mag-tono ng kahit anong Turbo Diesel that has Bosch-type injection system - including of course our own Mazda's with RF and R2 engines and maybe even some with WLT-31's!
This lesson has encouraged me because now I can confidently tune and adjust the turbo diesel engine that I plan to get for my B2500.
Hope it wasn't too boring,
Best Regards,
Dusky Lim

Dear yowza01:
Sir, very sorry to hear about your accident.
Kawawa naman truck mo.
As to the side-mirror, I have a feeling that the later model B2200's and B2500's share doors, the late model B2200 mirror looks similar to mine.

P.S. Sa ngayon, naghahanap pa ako ng matinong makina, - there are a few out there, but they are all in bad condition - and all use automatic transmission. Another issue is the gearing, right now I can rev up to 4000+ RPM with the stock naturally-aspirated engine and stock tires, to be able to use the full potential of a turbo, I would have to change tires to larger ones and maybe even get a taller final drive in the differential.Last edited by duskylim; March 8th, 2011 at 01:37 PM.

*yowza: naku madami talagang reckless drivers. buti na lang at hndi ka nasaktan sir. anyway, it's better to use period-correct side mirrors [or is it just me?] pwede din naman un mas modelo na malaking mirrors depende na lang taste mo. hehe.
*dusky: the surplus engines have more horses than the local ones, right? so i guess it's okay to get the ranger engine [or better yet, CRDi ones!] with an auto tranny.

Dear Guys:
Wow! Lots of questions lately.
Dear yowza:
To be frank the last time I "bought" side mirrors was when mine disappeared after parking near the National Orthopedic Hospital several years ago.
The side mirrors in my B2500 are power operated. The actual mirrors just clip on to the adjusting mechanism.
Someone "liberated" them from me, that afternoon.
I went to the squatter area behind the place and inquired as to who may have them - lo and behold they appeared.
At least they washed and cleaned them up a little.
I had the privilege of buying back my mirrors for Php 600.
I think we will have to ask Fordmaster in Banawe for the current price of your mirrors.
Ronn:
Sir, ang problema is that although may mga makina available, wala naman sariwa akong nakita - which is what keeps me from getting them.
Keep on Trucking!!!
Best Regards,
Dusky Lim

been planning to buy a B22,
any offer here mazda tsikoteers?
i don't need a car with fancy set-up, with unassuming presence,.....just the basic engine-tranny-brakes runs well (in short, no issues) and no overheating issue before (just be honest with me regarding this one) as i observed mazda cylinder heads warp easily once overheated, good body, some scratches acceptable.....to be a daily driver, weekend hauler and family's second home on the road as well as a back-up for my in-laws' pickup.........wifey and i applied for some little loans and hopefully be approved in a matter of days....Last edited by miked; March 11th, 2011 at 01:25 PM.
