first day on our carnival and how i survived.
picked it up at the bank warehouse, installed new battery, poured in 3.5 liters of bd to come up with roughly 10% mix (would have been 20% if the maids hadn't thrown away all the 1.5 cola pet bottles), got oil change, and car and muffler wash.
this was really my first test drive and it is indeed a very comfy ride. walang laban ang lubak at humps. it's a risky thing to drive a car that hasn't been run for 6 months, but my inital km gave me a lot of confidence and i ended up driving for 2 and half hours in city traffic.
compared to my old trusty 1.6l toyota corolla gli, it just doesn't have the same rate of acceleration at first gear, but 2nd and 3rd aren't so far behind. the exhaust is still sooty at 3k rpm but a great leap in improvement after the bd had kicked in and the exhaust wash. not so bad smelling too, but definitely not french fries like someone claimed.
everything would have been perfect except... please note my unit has manual transmission (a rare breed)... right in the middle of EDSA, the clutch pedal began to get stuck after being full depressed. as in pag-angat ng paa ko, di sasama ang pedal so it's the equivalent of being cut off at the knees (or being d**kless) since the transmission was not engaged. literally i had to hook the pedal with my foot and pull it up kaya biglang usad yung sasakyan. lagi nang nagstuck pag at least 3/4 down ang pedal.
buti na lang i've gone through worse driving challenges kaya di nagpanic, pero HANEP SA STRESS. nadaan kung timpla timpla na lang ng gas, brake at clutch through about 20 minutes of de-pagong traffic (seemed like hours!) and made it to a supermarket (that's right, yun ang first instinct ko) and got a can of WD40. true enough, the clutch pedal lever joints, though still looking very fresh, had rust. spritz spritz and ok na.
smooth trouble-free sailing to our house and gave the family a ride. smiles and happiness for everyone.
things to get used to:
-no handy hand brake, and look when releasing parking brake so as not to open hood (rookie mistake)
-there is no trunk door lever, because there is no trunk. pero may way ba to open the hatch without getting down?
-big mama 180 turning radius, but not bad at just corners
-knowing it's wide, but not THAT wide so stop overcompensating para di sisisngitan sa kanan
-limited visibility to the left when making a left turn
-no real good place to put collected P200 worth of coins (dati sa ashtray)
-thought of great car with no bank loan
next steps:increase bd mix to 20% and bring to casa for full check up.
long day. exhausted. our carnival is home.

August 18th, 2005 09:25 AM #404Leolop, congratulations on your new ride! There is a coin tray between the cupholders above the CD holder, won''t hold P200- worth though. The hatch unlocks when you unlock the door. Get used to making 4-point turns instead of 3. The ride is plush specially in the middle row where the engine noise is but a whisper.

Lensio,
Long time no see. Welcome back
Leolop,
It's a good thing you made it home all right. I thought you had your mechanic with you when you made an initial check of the unit --hindi ba nya napansin yung sticky condition ng clutch?
Anyway, are you sure about ramping the biodiesel mix up to 20 percent? Hindi ba medyo mataas yon, not to mention that you'll need 15 liters of biodiesel for every full tank you load. At P70 per liter of BD, that's more than P1,000 already
If your coins won't all fit in the ashtray, you can try storing them in the bin on top of the dash, sa ibabaw ng center aircon vents. Yun nga lang, baka maingay sila kung dun mo ilagay.
Also, here's something I only discovered after three years of Carnival driving... there is a card holder at the left side of the steering wheel, above the small coin holder thingy. Very useful for storing those NLEX card-type tickets.
Lastly, when it's time to renew your Carnival's registration, you might want to bring it to the casa to have them show you how the stencil for the engine number is taken... it's a real killer.

guys, thanks for the coin holder suggestions. my daughter also offered her pink plastic piggy bank. i guess i'll just reduce the amount i store, but this is really my emergency money. nangyari na ba sa inyong magbabayad ng parking and surprise! naiwan o walang laman ang wallet?
can someone give me a walk through how to release the spare tire in case i get a flat? and what kind and capacity should the jack be? i'm partial to hydraulic myself. the car didn't come with any. i can't imagine using an alligator jack to lift this thing.

hello,
fellow carnival owners.
mejo OT muna ako sa current topic...just ran across this thread while googling...
my unit is a carnival park 2 (gray unit) and it just came from casa, newly overhauled.
just to make it short, I'll give a sequence of events of how it happened.
- weird noise from engine, not from belt but sounded like a bearing problem (few months ignored)
- one night a family member of mine drove it when the oil indicator lit
- he checked everything, there was oil, normal temp etc and nothing seemed to be wrong (wrong assumption)
- next day, car won't start
- casa found the culprit to be the oil pump chain which broke down causing lost of supply of oil to the entire engine
- result overhaul
sabi nung mechanic, he had about 11 cases na of the same problem. when I finally got the unit out, another unit was being brought in with the same problem.
so the key is 1. frequency of change oil (to take care of the oil chain) and 2. do not ignore weird engine noise.
3.IMPORTANT: shut the engine off and have it towed when the oil indicator comes on (probably every driver familiar with an engine would know this but keep your family members/driver informed)
hope this helps and inform you ahead of time in case it happens to you.
ok. enough of the background...have some questions too on my next post.
I hope welcome ako dito.

leolop, sa unit ko, na stuck up yung pang release ng spare tire. so what we usually do is just
use a jack to get the tire out. (this is how they steal spare tires).
I use an alligator jack in combination with the jack that it comes with (the one that you turn and turn).
guys, the tip on the use of the coin tray is great. for emergency purposes
Question:
im on a 4-speed ECAT. But lets say your on the foot of a steep ramp. even if I go "2" or "L", and fully depress the accelator pedal, the RPM still stays at 2000. and resulting to poor climbing ability. sometimes I have to kill the A/C unit to get it up to steep ramps or gain momentum first on flat ground.
In my opinion, it engages the clutch immedietly so it doesn't get to any higher rPM. if this was a manual, we probably get the rpm higher and slowly release the clutch.
My ATF is Dexron III. I've tried the cheaper ones, ganun pa din. Ganun ba talaga (I'm thinking this is not built for steep climbs unlike the mitsu delica etc...) pero other than that its great on the road, acceleration lalu na when turbo kicks in, brakes, ride comfort. Hope someone can enlighten me.
thanks in advance!
