May 10th, 2008 04:03 PM #2222kia carnivals J3 engine does not have any GLOW plugs unlike conventional diesel engine like the mitsubishi 4D56 engine.. Engine heater can be found near the intake manifold and its main function is just to heat up the initial air intake of the engine..if the glow indicator is blinking possible that there are short in the heater wirings or its already busted... try first removing the heater then have it cleaned...also have your alternator checked (see my other posts regarding alternators) this is one of the main problems of carnivals the alternator that always have loose connections but can be remedied by simple soldering and reinforcing of the charging poles..
one thing i noticed with carnival engines assuming its in good condition, it can be easily started even at cold.. I have tried push starting it myself!! (when my batteries went dead on me due to continuous playing of loud sounds) in our garage have an inclined, i pushed it a little backwards then when it started to roll down i jump back to the van and released the clutch, just one kick and the engine started immediately unlike to other diesels that need to be pushed a long way before starting..

May 12th, 2008 09:04 AM #2223Thanks a lot for the information. It won't just start now. I've brought the battery to a dealer and they told me it's still good. What seems to be the problem is the starter. I will have to look for some help in pushing it, kinda heavy one. Is it ok, to jumpstart it backward or thru its reverse gear? My garage is inclined too, but my car is parked opposite the inclination. I'm planning to bring it to fronte banawe where I understand there are kia mechanics available. Is it safe, or better kia service centers na lang? Salamat po ulit. This thread is really helpful. Kudos to the organizers.

May 12th, 2008 09:54 AM #2224if you are push starting the vehicle in the reverse direction, put your manual transmission to REVERSE, if your using automatic, you cannot push start your vehicle..
is your engine cranking but will not start or it does not crank at all?? do you hear clicking sound when you place your key to start (tak tak sound) but the engine is not cranking?? possible you have bad starter copper contacts!! its very easy to repair you just need to pull down your starter and replace those copper contacts.. thats a common problem to kia starters.. the copper contacts are hammered by the starter magnetic coil to engage the starter.. if these contacts are bad, your starter will not engage...
you can push start your vehicle a few meters of push and it will start easily.. but if your vehicle engine is cranking but wont start possible you have engine problem or fuel supply delivery problem

May 13th, 2008 10:27 PM #2225Hi, I am new in this thread. I have a 02 Carnival Park II TDI a/t. I bought it second hand at 04 with 25K mileage. Now it is at 60K. So far I like the car, it had a comfort ride, a lot of room, good aircon. Even it had so far give me problems that most of you had posted. I experienced the loose terminal of the alternator, started with it didn't charge the battery due to burned cable/connector. I didn't realized it is also loose inside the alternator until it over voltage. I changed it with a surplus. Recently I have this knocking noise after starting when engine is cool but noise disappear after it warm up. But this noise gets louder later and didn't get away only reduce even engine get hot. I decided to bring the car to Kia Pasig which they found out that it is a oil pump problem. They have to bring down the engine to replaced the pump, sprocket, chain and tensioner. Since the engine is down, I also ask them to replaced the timing belt and all the other things goes with the belt. The car still with Kia Pasig not finished yet. My bill is now over 50T. I asked the mechanics what cause the defect of this oil pump but they didn't give me an answer. Anyone have idea what is the cause? I think it is a defect of the carnival as yesterday I visit the progress of my car, there is another Carnival LS with the same problem lining up after me to be repair.

May 13th, 2008 10:41 PM #2226this could be caused by using thicker oil and using too much additives.. i have a kia carnival 2001 model, we bought it 2005 and have it for 3 years and we did not have that oil pump problem.. i assume it is caused by using thicker oil and additives that make the oil thicker which in turn can affect oil pump performance especially during high speed.. for my carnival I only used ordinary diesel engine oil and just have it oil changed frequently since ordinary oil is much cheaper

May 18th, 2008 09:36 PM #2230kenzie, have your crankshaft pulley checked possible its already slipping causing poor brake assist.. if crankshaft pulley is OK have your vacuum booster lines checked for leaks and also check your vacuum assist pump (located at the back of alternator) for vacuum strength and if possible have it cleaned..
mintoy, try changing your ATF first prior doing any transmission overhaul.. try first other possible cause of the problem like loose connections, cable adjustments, etc.. success rate for Automatic transmission overhaul is very low.. so if i were you it will not be included in my list.. if you could find a surplus automatic transmission that will be good instead of having it overhauled by casa..
One can only hope.
Cheaper brands than Motolite but reliable as well
