If you read through this entire thread, you'll find that most owners have had problems with their Carnivals at one time or another, although the Gen 2 Carnival seems to have less problems than the Gen 1.
The Carnival is problematic in terms of repairs because spare parts are sometimes difficult to come by, and some problems, particularly regarding the engine, are difficult to diagnose.
If you find a unit that runs well, it will not be expensive to maintain --regular PMS lang every 5,000 kilometers. However, when a problem comes up... I for one am keeping my fingers crossed. My Carnival is almost 6 years old and has nearly 180,000 kilometers on its odometer, and I haven't had major engine trouble yet.
If you do look for a second hand unit, I'd recommend looking for a Gen 2 model. Check the mileage and see if the physical appearance of the van tallies with the reading on the odometer.
If the unit has logged over 70,000 kilometers, then the owner should have had the timing belt replaced already. Let the owner drive the van for you --see if he observed proper warm-up and cooldown protocols for the turbocharger. By this I mean that the van should be driven slowly from a cold start until the engine reaches normal operating temperature. Also, after a strenuous drive, the engine should be allowed to cool down while in idle for at least 2 minutes (for relaxed driving without engaging the turbo, the manual states that the engine can be turned off immediately, but Carnival owners on the forum are of the consensus that a cooldown period of even just 1 minute would be better than none at all).
Check for unusual grinding noises, squeaks, squeals, puddles of lubricant or oil stains on the garage floor, uneven tire wear, condition of suspension components, pulling power, white or black smoke coming from the tailpipe, and all the other things you usually evaluate on a second hand vehicle. Happy hunting.
For the 2002 Carnival, PMS interval is also every 5,000 kilometers. I have my unit serviced at my suking gas station since the 5,000-km PMS only involves a change oil, oil filter and air cleaner element. I only bring my van to the casa every 20,000-km and 40,000-km PMS since more service items are included in this interval, such as changing the fuel filter, engine coolant, and others.
Kaya din naman gawin ang mga ito sa labas ng casa, pero mahusay kasi ang technician ng Kia Pangasinan kaya gusto ko dalhin yung van doon paminsan-minsan para ipatingin sa "specialist" kumbaga.

sir celd15b: I still cannot consider myself a veteran with this car since I had my sedona for only 10,000 kms but I do love the van. I think one reason this thread is this big is because most owners feel the same and I have been following it 3 years before I had mine.
When it comes to the normal parts that you regularly replace to maintain, it is relatively cheap. That is why it is important that you look for one that has had TLC from its previous owner. I agree with Sir Mikey, get the Sedona (local gen 2), because they were already able to fix most of the issues from the local Carnival (gen 1) I even believe that it looks better than new Carnival since the styling is more classic and it seems it has better kits inside. And, do get the LS. I used to complain about the plastics of the Sedona until I saw the plastics of the Fortuner. In the end it is still the best value for money as long as you don't get a lemon. Better yet, if your budget permits, get the Carnival II Crdi (imported gen 2). Remember, while it was new, critics all concede that it has the best value for money at 1.3M. Can you imagine the value you get after 4 years at one third of the price?
sir yapoy86: the "kadjot" that I feel in my Sedona is most noticeable as I am about to release my foot from the accelerator pedal. That is when we are gently thrown forward a little. And it does not matter if I do it ever so gently. Therefore everytime I slow down or about to hit the brakes it happens (except when I am holding down the clutch).Could it still be the same problem? Can't this be fixed? Thanks again.
sir mikey: we may be going to Dagupan again this weekend. Instead of passing by Camiling I will just pass by Urdaneta instead. We usually arrive early but I will try to make at your Cafe when it is open, it is usually hard to tell exactly when we arrive. I will just introduce myself, if we get to see you when you are there (after I pay the bill, of course). I know now why my rpm is so high when my kph is low: I did notice that you and sir diesoline wrote down that you were in 5th gear. Do we have 5th gear? . . . just kidding. My mechanic said it was the sensor.

sir francisy2003: if you happen to find yourself in Makati, near Makati Med, I may also be able to help with your manual hunt. Although, I have to say, I was so dissapointed to see our manual. There were tons of information that I was hoping to see there but was not able to find.

well that is the "Engine Break" which can be more noticeable on diesel engines compared to gas engines... you may need to adjust your throttle cable to minimize the slack of the cable.. you can adjust it easily.. you will see a LOCK metal on the end of the cable (injection pump side) remove that and pull the cable away up to the least possible slack.. pulling too much might increase your idling speed.. once you have pulled the cable, return the LOCK metal to keep the cable in its position...
yung slack ng cable also affects yung engine response especially pag mag rock back and forth yung engine...
also you might need to change your engine supports...
normal sa front wheel driven vehicles yung backlash problem especially sa carnival kasi mabigat yung van... siguro kung magpalit ng brandnew transmission and CV joints inner and outer will solve the problem..

March 27th, 2008 11:20 PM #2180also does anyone here experienced with your KIA Carnival na parang may usok na pumapasok sa loob ng cabin?? lalo na pag medyo mausok yung nasa harap eh naaamoy yung usok?? assuming na good pa yung mga door seals at walang naman butas sa harapn or sa may firewall.. also assuming na naka recirculate yung aircon vents or better na if disabled na yun..
