2011 Kia Sportage SX introduced in Canada. Features Kia’s 2.0L GDI Turbo four-cylinder engine!
Kia Canada will soon put on sale a 2011 Sportage SX trim, which will add a brand-new 2.0L GDI turbo engine to the automaker’s line-up. Thanks to the implementation of a cutting-edge powertrain technology, such as gasoline direct injection and turbo systems, the all-new flagship engine produces the power of a V6, while at the same time, delivers the fuel economy of a four-cylinder engine.
Despite its small size, the 2.0L GDI turbo engine boasts more power than the previous 2.7L V6 engine. Kia Canada has not released the power ratings for the new turbo powerplant, but we believe the four-banger will produce the same amount of power (274-hp) as it does in the 2011 Kia Optima Turbo.
The 2.0L turbo engine features a twin-scroll turbocharger for excellent low-end torque, which peaks between 1850-3000 rpm. This state-of-the-art turbo engine will be coupled with Kia’s in-house developed 6-speed automatic transmission. The all-new six-speed automatic features “Neutral Control,” which shifts the transmission into neutral while stuck in traffic (in ‘D range’ and with brakes applied for more than 2 seconds).
In addition to more power under the hood, the 2011 Sportage SX will also include a panoramic sunroof, 18-inch alloy wheels, push button start, ventilated driver’s seat, UVO infotainment, 7-speaker premium sound system, rear spoiler, leather seating and auto-dimming rearview mirror with Homelink. According to Kia Canada, the SX trim will cost $36.995, while sales will commence in spring this year.
“The addition of the SX package to the 2011 Sportage range in Canada further enhances our positive momentum on the vehicle while introducing a whole new dimension to both design and power, including exception fuel economy. The 2011 Sportage SX completes our powertrain offering for Canadian market and the 2.0L Turbo GDI four-cylinder engine provides a high level of world-class technology,” commented Robert Staffieri, marketing director of Kia Canada.

I can only cry … who not in EU? That would be very decent competotor for VW Tiguan 2.0 TSI …

Sooner or later, the Sportage Turbo will be available in Europe. Other carmakers have already introduced plenty of turbocharged cars and SUVs there, so Kia will have to follow, or it may loose some sales against competitors.

Good luck seeing 1 here in the US anytime soon. Two of my local Kia dealerships can’t keep any 2011 Optima EX’s in stock and can’t keep any Sportage’s in stock whether LX or EX after having been out for 5 months now. The dealerships claim Kia cannot keep up with orders. My mind is set on either a:
1) 2011 Optima SX with Tech pkg.
2) 2011 Sportage SX Turbo with Tech pkg
Hyundai is slow to release the new models but nowhere as disappointing as Kia’s abysmal production status. It’ll be a year before I get the vehicle I want. So I may lease a Sonata Turbo, MDX or TL Tech for 2 years until Kia can keep up and offer products that can actually eventually make the showroom floor.

Horsepower rating is 260, no torque number yet

I’m expecting the Sportage SX Turbo on my lot within the next month. It’s true Kia is having a hard time keeping up with demand of the new Sorento, Sportage, and Optima…..which could be seen as a great thing for Kia and a bad thing for consumers wanting one. There are about 75 Optima SX Turbo at the port in Tacoma, WA waiting to be allocated to dealers and I can’t wait to get my hands on it!

What about middle east?

I’ve always put the transmission in neutral when I’m stopped, whether in a vehicle with a manual or automatic transmission. It seems the computer will do that for me now! Though force of habit will probably have me still doing that… I wonder when we’ll see this SX Sportage in the USA? I’d love to see one in person to compare with the EX…
- Greg Says: January 17th, 2011 at 4:19 pm
That is really weird, because I always place my transmission in Neutral, too. But, I always drive hand on the gearshift – manual or automatic.

Minor feature add, but it also gets dual exhaust. I can’t wait for this vehicle.

Oh, you mean the 2.0 GDi Turbo that Actually belongs in a KIA Forte Koup and Hyundai Veloster, right?
