Agree with you that the new Jazz is pricey.
However, the previous 1.3L Jazz iDSI CVT model has no "paddle shift" per se. It has a + / - button on the steering wheel for "manual" shifting.....
The new Jazz that you are referring to (without paddle shift) is for the 1.3L iVTEC A/T. The 1.5L iVTEC A/T has paddle shift. (but no mudguard...)....

got a point bro, but i think there are more to it than just cvt & paddle shifters alone. could have been the 10cup holders also hehehe
seriously, there were a lot of improvements with the former jazz, improved suspension, better seats, newer engine which could mean newer ecc, better tires, improved visibilities, torque converter, etc... but the question remains that are these worth the extra bucks you pay for the older jazz? to me, i dunno, but honestly i care less.
but i am looking for a great hatch and it so happens i have set my eyes on this car and was waiting for it for the longest of time. call it ridiculous, but that's just me i guess :D
(let's just wait and see if i came up with complains or satisfaction when i get my unit pretty soon)

Here's my own view why i think this car (2nd. Gen Honda Jazz/FIt) is pricey....
1. Imported Car:
1-1: Transport cost fm. Thailand to Philippines. (remember City & Civic is Assembled in HC PhilIppines!)
1-2: (pre AFTA) Tax to imported CBU.
2. Design itself: There are other aspects of the Car that Costs money - other than the Engine...
2-1: Ultra Seats: this alone Costs some serious dough...the One-Touch Dive Down seats
is going to cost way more money than the Civic's Fixed seats!
2-2: Vehicle Information Display: this car is equipped with Trip computer as well as
Instant and Average Fuel Consumption that you don't get in the Civic. Hey this one is not Free of Charge...
2-3: Temperature Sensor / Display: this one also cost some money....
2-4: winker on the Side Mirror.
2-5: auto retract / powered Side mirrors (these are not available on any of the 1.8V/S)
2-6: Paddle Shifter, also costs money! (these are not available on any of the 1.8V/S. only for the Auto 2.0li model)
2-6: Comparing Jazz 1.5V (5A/T) vs. Civic 1.8V (5MT w/o Airbag) is a moot point because of
differing class & equipment level....
so if u value more on ENGINE performance, then better get the Civic!
About:
>>-vtec-more power=more Fuel consumption vs idsi
actually Japan MITI's rating of the old 1.3iDsi vs. new 1.3i-Vtec both using CVT . show's a rating of 24km/li.
Though its dis-appointing they were not able to improve it (like what they did for the FD Civic), in reality its the same.
And about your SA's explanation why CVT was dropped, its not because it will cost more (i think that's how they were
Oriented how to answer by HCPI) its because Honda doesn't want a repeat of the same problem with old way...that is
introducing New Unproven technology in the market outside of Japan. Also the new 5A/T loses some in Fuel Efficiency
department, at least its proven to be more reliable than the CVT.....esp. the new variant in JDM's CVT + Torque Converter....
those are New Unproven technology that may bring harm to Honda's reputation if things are not Done Right!.
And your Comment on the new "Altis" having an old engine....(correct me if i'm wrong) i know Toyota has upgraded it
as it now has Variable Valve Timing control for Both Intake & Exhaust side.... the previous one also have for INTAKE side...
and its actually quite Fuel Efficient. and please read thru "http://www.canadiandriver.com/" 50 liter challenge.
the New Corolla (Altis for South east asia...) 1.8li + (antiquated) 4A/T was more fuel efficient than the Civic's 1.8li + 5MT! UNBELIEVABLE!
I think other than (Engine/Gearing) Weight of the car, Rolling Resistance , Aerodynamic Drag play a key role in Fuel Consumption!

September 3rd, 2008 01:59 AM #217well, it's overpriced but i still think it will sell at a more expensive price.
the honda crv is now selling at almost 1.3M and look at the lines.
the honda civic at sub 900K.
in the 90's the 1st gen was priced at 700K, the Honda Civic at less than 500K.
the new business today is not only about making a quality product and then sell for a profit. it's all about financing/installment. with easy approval in financing, they can also easily raise the price of the product.

Could also be due to the high demand that the manufacturer prioritized new car deliveries vs. spare...
