June 24th, 2010 11:28 PM #1sirs,
newbie here. I am planning to buy my first car. M wife is pregnant and we are planning to buy one before she gives birth. My budget is limited to PhP 500k.
I am seriously considering Honda HRV for the following reasons:
1. Looks differently and very few on the road.
2. I think it has sufficient space for baby strollers and other baby items.
3. It has 1.6L enginer hence does not consume as much fuel as the typical SUVs (although this is only a miniSUV),
However, I have several concerns as well:
1. Since only a few units are available, spare parts maybe a problem or may be very expensive especially lights etc.
2. Not quite sure if it performs well given that it has very few units released in the Philippines (Why are there a few units here? problem with the model/engine?)
3.Safety features not familiar.
Hope you can help me decide if HRV is worth buying or not. If not, I would appreciate if you can recommend something that would suit my needs. Thanks in advance. God bless.

In terms of looks, I've always liked the HRV. But like you said, parts might be a problem.
There are no new HRVs being released in the market which makes the 2nd hand HRVs chance on getting a repair or replacement part quite high.
You may want to check out the Old Honda Jazz.

nice choice. the honda hrv is a great car. we almost bought one but the family went with the CRV instead. i keep forgetting to recommend this car to new buyers.
local units don't have an automatic option, but they do have realtime 4x4, like the 1st generation CRV.

June 25th, 2010 11:49 PM #4hi there.. thanks for the replies. Jazz is also a good choice, however, I prefer something elevated kasi ayoko silaw while driving especially at night.
For those who owns a HRV, appreciate your help.. thanks..

suggestion lang po
something new but slightly out of your budget. A brand new Toyota Avanza. fuel efficient, spacious for a starting family like yours, more and more are buying this vehicle due to its flexibility (you can use it as a mini van, a hauler or a puv)
a 2nd hand Avanza is on your budget reach. but i recommend get a brand new since you'll be keeping this car for a long time.
imho, di ko talaga taste ang HRV, kulang na lang ng coffin sa likod e. no offense po.

The HRV is getting pretty old, I think it was released around 10 years ago. Given that age, all local units would need some degree of maintenance. And since that unit was not popular, parts will be hard to find or would be "on-order" basis. Not really something you would want for a dependable transport vehicle.
Instead of the relatively rare Honda HRV, why not take a look at the Nissan X-Trail 4x2 A/T?
With your budget, you can get a 2003-2004 X-Trail 2.0 4x2 A/T or even a 2005 unit with some negotiation.
It has a very practical & spacious interior. Large cargo area with plastic flooring so it would be easier to clean up with just a wet towel. The ride quality and handling is almost car-like.
Since the styling of the X-Trail hasn't changed much in the local market, a 2004 unit will not look any older than the 2009 units. And the popularity of the X-Trail gives you many choices to choose from, so if you are doubtful about something on a certain X-Trail, there are many more to choose from the local buy & sell classifieds or 2nd hand car dealers.Last edited by ghosthunter; June 26th, 2010 at 10:13 AM.

btw, mahirap ang pwesa..Nabasagan ng rear windshield ang brother in law ko, ayun nahirapan maghanap ng salamin.. So he was forced to get it from the casa.. Ang tagal dumating..

June 27th, 2010 02:09 AM #10I have a Honda HR-V, and we're expecting a baby soon.
Boot wise I've found some pushchairs that fit fine, whilst others need a wheel off to squeeze in. Still a fair bit of space left with it in the boot, but it's not a huge boot. That said one woman suggested simply taking off the parcel shelf, then you can get as much as you want in!
The car doesn't have ISOFIX points, which is where you can secure a child seat, so you'll probably need a frame for a child seat as well as the seat itself - expensive.
As for the car, I've always loved it, and have been very happy with it since I got mine a few years back. Great for foraging off the backroads where others cars can't go. The VTEC engine is best if you can find one. It's a robust little bugger that's for sure, we've had numerous knocks and bashes and it takes them and more.
