According to one of our veteran transport officers, there was also an incident a few years ago when a unit was rushing to bring a patient to SLMC. The unit counterflows E.Rod and takes the usual precaution (sirens set for closed quarters maneuvering, all emergency lights on). But somehow, a biker still doesn't see the unit and plows head-on into it. The on-board medic alights from the ambulance, pulls the biker and the motorbike from underneath the ambulance and the ambulance is made to continue onto its destination. I don't know the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, but AFAIK, the medic was left on the scene and called for back up. The biker died, btw.
wow. nakakatakot den pala maging ambulance driver.

kung congressman lang ako, i'd lobby for an additional class to be given to all primary students. tanggalin na lang homeroom. palitan na lang ng SAFETY CLASS. dapat lahat ng uri ng safety, road, home, disaster, lab, etc. i-discuss sa mga bata.

I am sometimes GUILTY of this one.... Opportunista talaga ako in real life, mapa pera man or maskin sa daan. If I can easily avoid traffic I grab it, and yes even behind an ambulance

Dati, naiinis din ako dito pero nung nas US ako, they had this logic and it seemed sound so OK na din sa akin.

When I had more sense, experience, and driving intelligence, I concluded it's just too much of a danger in exchange for a few minutes of travel time.

Kaya I've ever only done it a couple of times and never again. Now, I buy really fast sleeper cars. hehehe.

As I've posted earlier (or was it in another thread?), we actually drive faster and harder when we are in the process of responding to an emergency. Why? Because we don't have to take patient comfort into consideration and we have to get there as fast as we can so we can administer whatever pre-hospital care needs to be done to the patient.

And listen closely because we shout instructions over the PA system of the ambulance to get stupid, flat-footed, or nervous drivers out of the way. One memorable instance was when I instructed a bunch of SUV's in a politicos convoy to pull over because we were responding to an unconscious patient.

It's really hard to make a judgement call based on one instance so I'd still err on giving the benefit of the doubt.
