conzky,
Most of them have no meanings. They were just made up by the marketing people.
Some used to have meanings:
DX - de luxe
LE - limited edition/luxury edition
SE - sports edition

Mga german meron... like 318i usually that means 3-series, 1.8liter engine... E220 E-class 2.2 engine, etc..
Pero in most cases, ekek lang yun to make a car sound "higher end"... Sa states uso yung LE/SE for high end... dito naman uso pag may "X" o kaya "S"... usually "R" pag "sporty/racy"... "i" usually injected (not carb)...
Kung ano lang naisipan ng manufacturer... wala naman convention ang mga trim codes eh...

di ko nga alam how did they come up with these abbreviations eh. imagine XL na, extra luxury pa... eh aircon lang laman nun eh. walang mags. most of them are pawis steering (yung mga cars during the early and late 80s), etc.

The Mercedes-Benz W123 Models
The models are divided into two main categories here; gasoline driven and diesel driven models. The models are marked by a number and sometimes one or more trailing letter. The number represents the size of the engine in liters (the exception is when a larger engine is installed in the same model at a later date), like the 200 has a 2.0 liter engine and 230 a 2.3 liter engine. The letters have the following meaning (some of them are not used for the W123 model);
S Sports model
E Einspritzung (fuel injection)
C Coupe (two door)
T Transport und Touristik (station wagon)
L Lang (long)
SL Sport Leicht (sport light)
The body has the suffix W and the gasoline engine the suffix M and the diesel engine OM. This represents the following;
W Wagen (car)
M Motor (engine)
OM Öl Motor (oil/diesel engine)

Well, such letters do not mean anything. For example, the Civic EX in the US is the same as the VTi here. Car manufacturers just designate their vehicles with any letter, like the Altis. I don't know why they stuck with the incomplete-sounding single letters, and where did the "J" come from.
To entertain myself, I just made some meanings out of the letters of some cars.
Mercedes:
SLK - Spyder Luxury Kompressed
SL - Spyder Luxury
CLK - Coupe Luxury Kompressed
CL - Coupe Luxury
A-Class - Affordable Class
C-Class - Compact Class
E-Class - Executive Class
S-Class - Superior Class
ML-Class - Mountain Luxury Class
Honda:
ESi - Extra Special injection
VTi - Variable Timing injection
SiR - Super injected Racer
