What do you mean by "tune up" on cars?

Specifically, tune up means valves tappet adjustment and ignition timing adjustment.

yes sir, nakakalito lang minsan nakalagay sa menu ng car shop "tune-up" pero change oil and filter lang pala. :)

some shops will have minor tune-up and major tune-up choices.
minor tune up includes the usual pms like ignition timing, oil and oil filter replacement.
major tune up will include the above, plus valve tappet adjustment..
of course, the costs are different.
and there are variations that may include other minor services like checking the lights, transmission and differential fluids, tire pressures, etc... things that might not mean much to dyed-in-the-wool car fanatics, but mean a lot to newbie car owners.

"Tune-up" is an old school term that has more to do with carbureted engines. Typically, timing, AFR, idle speed, etc., are manually adjusted during the PMS of said engines.

EFI and engines that already has an ECU/ECM/PCM uses a myriad of sensors (ie. O2, ECT, knock, MAF/MAP, etc.) to keep the engine "tuned-up" in real time. The PMS involves just replacing consumable/serviceable parts like spark plugs, filters, faulty sensors, fluids, etc. You don't typically change the engine parameters like AFR, timing, idle speed, etc., as these are all computer-controlled.

It may still apply to specialized cars wherein ECUs parameters can be modified for performance (using piggyback or aftermarket ECUs). But in the context of factory-stock cars, manual tune-ups are typically no longer necessary.
