I don't see any evidence of that ever happening on a typical engine (ie. Daily/family car). Oil pressure might be elevated under certain driving conditions, yes, but even so, the filter media's total surface area is about a meter or so when unfolded. Whatever that instantaneous oil pressure is, is spread over the whole surface of the filter.... not concentrated on a single spot on the filter media. That being the case, there's not enough velocity and mass for these debris to perforate the media.
If the argument is that these metallic debris are small enough to pass through the filter, well, for as long as you're using a quality filter, then it will have only let through debris that are too small to cause any detectable damage. We're talking a few microns here. The debris may circle the engine a few times but it will eventually end up getting caught in all the gunk trapped in the filter.
There are situations when these metal debris (along with other crud) can go through the filter.... that is, if the filter isn't replaced frequent enough that dirt build up has clogged up the filter media. This will cause the oil filter bypass valve to open and recirculate unfiltered oil. That's why you shouldn't ignore the filter during servicing. And that is also why I do a mid-OCI oil filter change.
Let me be clear... I am NOT against putting magnets on oil filters, even though their real world effectiveness is debatable. I am just appalled at certain outfits selling them like snake oil, taking advantage of consumers' inherent belief that "if it's expensive, it must be really good." Again, if magnets are your thing, you don't need to spend a lot for it.

With proper care & maintenance + good drive habits, there shouldn't be any need for extras beyond what manufacturers recommend....But should 1 go for em, might as well grab the better ones. Placebos do have different levels of efficacy.[emoji4]

January 9th, 2019 02:06 PM #5703I guess if the magnet is cheap enough ok lang. maybe we can all agree that (aside from PM) regular and frequent quality oil changes is the key! hehe
