First of all, you have to understand that it is not as simple as bolting-on and expect huge gains in power. Upgrading your exhaust system will take a considerable amount of tuning which largely depends on your engine's stock output.
Surprisingly, aftermarket headers can turn out to be too good for the engine that you end up losing more power. This is why you have to tune it with a dyno test to determine its effectiveness.
There are also several types of headers. The 4-2-1 is aimed for mid range power, a 4-1 is for top end and so on.
For me, in the end, tuning is everything which is why I would suggest that you research about this extensively so that you would know what you want, what to expect from your set-up.
But once you get it right, the advantage is of course the expected power gain, you get a more throaty sound when coupled with the proper pipe diameter and muffler.

March 17th, 2009 12:00 PM #5thanks for the info!
reason for installing headers is to add more power to my engine and consume less gas but not the noisy sound

good headers could add more torque, kaya you can really start feeling the acceleration. bad, oversized ones could hurt the engine and maybe force your engine to run hotter.
if you want more power, you can probably start by investing in a new, clean air filter, new sparkplugs, and a full tune up with valve tappet and fuel/air adjustments (hindi yung basta i-timing light lang).
more power and better fuel efficiency... you cannot have both, you can only choose one.

Here's the universal rule:
"MORE HORSE POWER, LESS FUEL EFFICIENCY"
Just beware of many shops, expecially lots of local mufffer shops, who offers headers installation. Baka lalong masira ang makina mo. Nothing beats the regular tune-up maintenance w/c includes timing, change of sparkplugs, and the valves, fuel, and air adjustments.
Want a real power boost? Change the engine...
