Engine Modification 101?

anyone here know the ropes on modifying an engine? i know my way around cars, pero not that much in this particular field in gaining more HP. anyone here can explain the different modifications a car undergoes to gain more HP, be it bolt-on or otherwise. like stage 1, 2, 3 etc. hopefully in lay man's terms. tnx!

which engine or car in particular are you interested in?
civic? sentra? corolla? lancer? familia? etc... which one?
