to make the 4afe turbo reliable, what i mean is daily driven high boost you need to change the internals and maybe piggy back engine management is enuff and a good tuner.

Info about 4AGE engine
4AGE's came with either a "red top / small port" and a "blue top / big port" cylinder heads (which is 16 valve)
the earlier 4AGE 16 valve engines from 1985-1987 came with a "blue top / big port" head with a low compression 4 rib block (non reinforced).
then the later 4AGE 16 valve engine from 1988-1992 came with a "red top / small port" head with a high compression 7 rib block (extra reinforced).
as far as the 4AGE 20 valve (wich is the same 1.6L block w/ a 20 valve head) has the same size intake ports, but the only differences are the compression ratio of the block. the "silver top" 20 valve has a slightly lower compression ratio compared to the "black top" 20 valve which has a higher compression ratio, plus its has the VVTi system.
most common na ginagawa sa mga earlier 4AGE 16 valve engines is that their cylinder heads can be swapped on diff years. for example, as what we call it the 4AGE "big port" head / 7 rib block hybrid. which is bassically putting a older blue top head on the newer high compression 7 rib block (which also provides extra compression ratio & reinforcement)
usually, mas maganda ang "red-top / small port" high compression 4AGE for N/A (all motor) application. then yung "blue-top / big port" low compression 4AGE is better for turbo application (as long as you upgrade to Forged Pistons & Rods)
there is also a 7AGE hybrid, which is basically a 7AFE 1.8L block (found on USDM / JDM 1994-1998 1.8L Corolla's or Celica's) w/ a 4AGE head from the older AE86 / AE92 Corolla's (either a big port or a small port, depending on the set-up)
the advantage of the 7AGE hybrid is that you get the extra 1.8 liter displacement of the 7AFE block matched-up with the high revving 16 Valve 4AGE head.
anywayz, medyo mahaba na ito. well, heres some estimated HP figures on the 1st gen & 2nd gen 4AGE's.
1985-1988 4AGE 16V blue top / low comp = 125 hp
1989-1992 4AGE 16V red top / high comp = 140 hp
1993-1995 4AGE 20V silver top / high comp = 160 hp
1996-1998 4AGE 20V black top / high comp w/ VVTi = 170 hp
I'm going with Amaron when it's time to change. Motolite (which is more expensive than Amaron), has...
Cheaper brands than Motolite but reliable as well
