July 11th, 2009 11:35 PM #41gud pm...
We are looking for a car, it will be a gift for my sister, my sister really likes the Impreza but the agent told us that the gas consumption is 8km/l so my dad got t/o. Now he likes the Altis cause he believes that it eats lesser gas. My opinion i want the Focus because of its sporty look and it's diesel. But if between Impreza and Altis, i want the Impreza cause it's more unique, hatch and 100% made in japan. My sister will use it daily in the city and once a week NLEX. Is the altis still made in japan? Is it true that Altis eats lesser gas? please comments...thanks

8km/L on a compact car is reasonable. But then if that is what sales agents claim then allot some allowance to the downside. Altis is made in Thailand. Eats less gas as far as the driver makes it eat less gas. In general though it will still lose to the Focus TDCi cause diesel has more energy per liter than unleaded gasoline thus higher fuel economy. Add in cheaper diesel prices and this is the most economic choice. It might be more frugal than the 2.0L Impreza though...

These two are like comparing... well... apples and pineapples! Haha... Yung Altis kasi parang Camry alternative ang dating niya, while yung Impreza, for sporty and spirited driving. The Altis might have 1-2km/l advantage in fuel economy, but the Impreza will surely have better driving dynamics. In terms of luxury, pareho silang considered as "luxury" cars kasi pareho silang nagkakahalaga ng 1M plus pesos! Hehe... Comfort and economy vs sportiness -- take you pick na lang.

Resale value naman after 5 yrs kunwari ibebenta mo na di mo parin masasabi, kahit honda or toyota pa yan.

July 22nd, 2009 05:47 PM #48In my opinion, a buyer should stop thinking of selling something he/she hasn't bought yet...pleasure is priority!

If we're talking about 2.0 cars, then resale value goes out the window.
A Subaru Impreza WRX or STI will have pretty good resale value... your standard 2.0R... not so much... it's not as desirable as either of its turbocharged brethren.
Same goes for a Civic 2.0 or an Altis 2.0... the attraction of the Altis is economy and perceived low cost of ownership... and a 2.0 isn't a low-cost option for most people. Even if it's "just" an Altis, the 2.0 engine already places you in the "luxury" bracket when it comes time to register the car... which hurts the wallet... and the cost of running isn't as low as a Vios or an Altis 1.6. Ditto with the Civic.
That's why old Accords and Camries have resale value similar to Civics and Corollas, despite costing twice as much brand new... secondhand buyers aren't interested in running expensive cars... not unless they're rare sports models, like the WRX, SiR or EVO...
I could still make a case, secondhand for the Ford Focus TDCi... but it's saddled by public perception of the Ford brand... still... diesel is worth something on this market when it comes time to resell.

But talk of resale is nonsense for these cars. if resale is all that matters, you're better off buying a one or two year old secondhand subcompact (yes... a City or a Vios)... as those have already taken a big hit in terms of resale value, and will depreciate more slowly between there and the five year point, compared to a car you buy brand new.
You don't buy a car just to sell it, now, do you?
Ang pagbalik ng comeback...
