DILEMMA! 1999 Honda Accord VTI or 1997 Honda Civic VTI

The Accord is quite thirsty. Nasa 6km/L range lang yan...

Parts cost and availability is also at the disadvantage for the Accord.

But its the better car and given its price difference mas sulit sya sa older Civic...

The Accord consumes more gasoline. If your daily route is full of stop/go traffic, this will make your FC worst. But if your route is mostly flowing highway, FC figures would be "acceptable" 7-8 km/L.

Maintenance, basic oil change and sparkplugs are pretty much the same. But other stuff like suspension parts, etc would be more expensive with the Accord. The ride is better than the Civic. Replacement parts are easy to find but Civic stuff is much more common.

Mod parts, if you would go through tuning shops like SPEEDLAB, they can get you almost anything you might need to mod your Accord's performance including springs, engine stuff, electronics, etc.

The CIVIC is cheaper in the long run. Less thirsty on the gasoline and cheaper parts, important especially on a car more than ten years old.

actually i will only use the car during weekends and some long drives. i'll mostly use it in our province too.

i was hoping that the Accord can have atleast 8-9km/l highway driving so its 6km/l city driving? what is the FC of the Civic city and highway driving?

the accord should consume SLIGHTLY more than the civic... its a heavier car with a bigger engine.

but ride quality ought to be fantastic. ok din naman civic, pero i must say, pag nag executive class sedan ka na dito sa pinas, medyo mahirap na bumalik sa compact (at least, ako ganun, hehehe).

i think ok lang consumption nyan for long drives and weekend warrior duties. my cefiro gets 7-8, long drives my personal best is 9-10 (baguio, last month). and that is V6. mas matipid pa siguro yung 4-pot accord.

my civic vti gets about 9-10 city, 10-11 highway. never ako nagbreak ng 13-15 gaya nung sabi ng ibang tao sa civic forums. i wonder why. although malayo ang 7/liter sa 9/liter, mas gusto ko na sinasakyan yung midsize car ko these days... swabe ang ride, feeling pogi ako pag nakasakay ako (kunwari maraming pera lagi na pang-gas hehe).

what i really want to know is how big that SLIGHT difference in the fuel consumption of both models is and is it worth it? will the driving comfort compensate for the bigger hole in my pocket?

according to the earlier posts these are the FCs of both models.
Accord 6km/l City Driving, 7-8km/l Highway Driving.
Civic 9-10km/ City Driving, 10-11km/l Highway Driving.

are these numbers accurate? because that's about 3km/l difference which is quite big

Check mo lang maigi iyong roof medyo nakakalimutan noong iba prone sa kalawang . Sakit na ng Honda Accord iyan mahal din mag pa repair.

i get around 10-12kms/liter (city driving) on my civic kaso its the LXi version. its not exact always pero thats my average.

accord:

- much more expensive on the repairs pero konti lang difference sa civic kung change oil lang
- much better comfort driving. compared to the civic... matigas talaga upuan ng civic
- bigger car = more space
- as long as the previous owner took good care of it, its pretty much easy maintenance


civic:

- the resale value of the car would not get much lower that what you pay today.
- easier to sell than the accord (if you decide to sell on after)
- cheap replacement parts
- better modifications can be done
- fun and nimble to drive.

both have very good pros and cons, pero para sakin... accord na ko since malapit na ko magsawa sa civic ko pero personally, ill prefer a cefiro VIP hehe (a bias judgment).

pero objectively, get the civic because buying 2nd hand is a hit or miss. i would rather miss with a civic... not as bad as the accord if you get burned. (3X knock on wood)

di naman siguro 6km/liter ang accord. maybe ung 96-98 models. hell, my brother in law has a 00 crv a/t, but he gets 7-8, and the crv has a heavier body by far (at automatic 4wd pa). kung ganun kalakas talaga ang accord, might as well get an expedition, which gets 5-6 city, 7-9 highway. aztig ka pa sa expy.

ride quality is mostly all about wheelbase size. longer wheelbase, predictably better ride. so a civic will ride better than a suzuki alto, and an accord will ride better than a civic, etc etc...

i've no regrets in getting a midsize. i'm 34 now, and these days it's all about comfort and power (and a little bit of attitude na rin) for me. as an owner of 3 civics, i could say na malayo ang ride comfort ng midsize sedan versus compacts like the civic. it's like night and day.

plus yung power. mash the pedal ng midsize and it will out-accelerate a stock compact with a 1.6 engine. it will be much easier to overtake tricycles sa provincia, too.

a kapampangan cousin of mine once told me that some people, upon seeing a yuppie alight from a compact, would often wonder... "tapos na kaya nya bayaran yung kotse nya na yan?", whereas the same people would remark upon seeing the same yuppie alight from, say, an accord/cefiro/camry: "wow, yaman ah... dami pang gas! elegant taste too".

your choice should be all about you, as a person. if you like to be unpredictable and have a nonconformist attitude to life, get the midsize. if you like to be part of the fast and the furious, younger set (even if technically, you're 30), get the cmpact.

any idea what is the FC of the 99 Accord VTI Manual?


and how can i know if the mileage meter had been tampered with? because some of my friends are telling me that 85k mileage in a 13 year old civic is too good to be true. and you know what they say, if it's too good to be true it isn't.
