3 yrs ago just like any Filipina nurse in the US retired and went back to Phil. 2 yrs ago she asked her boys for a car so just like any loving Filipino children we say ok. She picked a Toyota Camry AT that cost i think P1.3M thats around US $27K, thinking she got the V6 top of the line Camry, but last year we visited her saw the Camry it was almost basic pretty disappointed we payed that much for it. Last night I was reading that camry, accord & legacy and made me wonder how much is a mid size car in phil. so I googled and found this Toyota Philippines site w/ a price list. a camry listed as P1,451,000 or US$31,000 I'm sure thats not fix price and can still go down but I was wow thats high.

Why is it more expensive? I was thinking is it the TAX? I always think in the US specially in California we get screwed in tax, everything is taxed here. I'm not just talking about camry i also looked at yaris Just curious...

About 20-40% of the price of motor vehicles here have to do with the tax structure of the Philippines. Plus, unlike the US where you have American, European and Japanese manufacturers and dealers in almost perfect competition with each other (not to mention a very vibrant pre-owned car market), here, its basically just the major Jap brands: Toyota, Honda, Nissan or Mitsubishi and not much else.

Taxes (virtually all cars are imports even if some are locally assembled), low volume of sales (as compared to other countries), expensive overhead (showroom, salaries, executives, etc)...
Want to check out other cars? Try the following website and click the brand names on the upper portion to see the pricelist of cars under that brand.

pag CBU, mayroong importation duty tax. tapos may 12% VAT pa on top.
pag asean galing, mas mababa yata ang duty tax kaysa sa hindi asean galing ang CBU.
galing asean ang avanza pero ang picanto ay hindi. kaya halos magka presyo ang picanto at avanza J.
masakit talaga ang tax

Face it. The pricing-scheme here in the Phils is just crazy. As in literally CRAZY. Stupid taxes.
The prado is priced ( I think ) 3.5m.

Sigh. That's just the way things are here. Being a third world nation, a lot of things are cheaper here than in the U.S., but that unfortunately doesn't extend to automobiles. We get taxed up the wazoo.
Agree with you there. Nicely put.
