No and we should be thankful.

Proton is, and was, a bleeding white elephant created by and for one man's ego. The Malaysians are trying to ditch it for a couple of years now without much success.

I hope they can rebuild their firms and adapt new, modern and better technology to cope up with the new market...
Well, some of the advantages Ford and Honda had at that time:

Ford: There was no one else mass producing cars at that time
Honda: Japanese import restrictions along with Japanese patrionism really made him sell his early models.

Francisco and Sarao, on the other hand, got smacked straight up against the imports, with Filipino colonial mentality working against them. Francisco did try to reinvest his earnings with a new assembly plant, but he is now in debt because of that.

As for Sarao, it was precisely the "hand-made" jeepney image that made him, and did him in... The company couldn't produce anything else because that is practically all that they were known for, and they didnt risk producing anything else.

To a certain extent... we may blame the weather for this.

Our country is a tropical paradise... not really a place conducive for passionate creative thinking. But rather, social relaxation is a plague.

It is apparent in Pinoy Designed Vehicles that they carry the air of a beach resort incorporated in the package.

As the nation is transformed to be a people who spends more time in the airconditioned malls... the design culture also changes. The old Jeepney design becomes more unattractive... and the PhUV or OPV becomes highly evolved.

The MVPMAP made PhUV can be considered as an evolutionary design as we cross this phase of a newly emerging Pinoy Generation. "Y" and "Z".

When I was in college, I had to think of a topic for my industrial design thesis. I proposed re-designing the jeepney. My teacher turned it down. He said that there have been a lot of student thesis about re-designing the jeepney but nothing was done about it. It is a tragedy that all those students' ideas were not tapped to improve the jeepney. What a waste of brain power.

Ehnriko mades a strong point about our values as a nation being reflected in the vehicles that we make. The Japanese have "kaizen" (continuous improvement), which is why their cars became better technically and in quality. We have the "pwede na iyan" mentality as seen in our locally made vehicles.

Note: Singapore has the same weather we have but they do not have the easygoing attitude that we have. It's their culture. They have "kiasu" mentality (ayaw magpatalo). So they always strive to be number one (best airport, etc).

Marcos had commissioned someone to redisgn the jeepney way back in the 1970's. One problem with redesigning the jeepney is that if it is patented, only 1 or 2 manufacturers will follow the design and it will not tauntamount to a revolution.

If I recall correctly, the program was called "Jeepney ng Bayan". It's design had a side loading door instead of a rear one. I saw a newpaper announcement a few years ago which showed a patented jeepney design. It's design too also had a side loading door on the right for entrance (like a bus), and a rear door at the back for exit. I got to ride a jeepney like this in Espana a few months back.

Right now, Ild like to support the airconditioned jeepney designs of David Motors. They ply arouns Buendia, and are quite spacious. There have been previous aircon jeepney designs, but this one I like a lot.

Yes, the "pwede na yan" mentality is also evident in government policies. It often works though, but we wont become the best adhering to it.

Thanks Varga... thanks everyone.

Dondi - you're right!... culture is the summation of a country's conciousness.

I wonder how we ever came to have this type of culture?... I for one, really hate the Jeepney... I never wanted to ride one, drive one nor even own one.

Imagine... it's already intended to load more than it should... then so much unnecessary abubuts are attached to it like excess baggages. Ang Bigat tingnan... and I'm sure... mabigat talaga dalhin for the jeepneys power train. Can you imagine where the fuel goes with this excess weight that it carries around unnecessarily whether it is loaded by commuters or not?... (and they talk about clean air act.)

It's clearly money being burned in vain!... (another Pinoy trait!)

Talk about priorities:

He will excell in things or ways no logical thinking individual dare not go!... and that is by being vain.

It's not art... nothing to do with art at all! no way jose!.

Pintor Kulapol.

When I was still an apprentice in oil painting at the age of 7... my Art teacher would call these Movie Bill Board Artists as Pintor Kulapols.. I really dont know what the word means... but I guess this is what is proliferating in our mainstream industry, artworld and even media.

So I guess... if the mainstream is a product of it's environment... I guess I can only blame Tito, Vic and Joey and Willy. I never enjoyed watching these noon time shows. What does majority of Pinoys find in these subliminally degenerative influences so good? What good does it do when your mind is constantly bombarded with talks and music with double meanings and suggestive messages and or lymirics?... Ex. "Itaktak mo... at Bubuka ang bulaklak at dadaan ang Reyna.."... My Gosh... and they are actually making money with these stupid songs! don't tell me.. it's the peoples opium to fight poverty. Mama Mia! No wonder... our Jeepneys look Ugly.

ok... time to be diplomatic.

I am only exagerating my figures of speeches in order to emphasize my point. I just hope that the real Pinoy art would become hi-lighted in the near future. And I believe we are not copycats and not cheap looking... just undiscovered... and exploited by the world except our own.

Dondi, Lio... umuwi na kayo!... let's start building our country. The time to reinvent our country is now. (Parang ang daling sabihin ano...)

There's a lot of work to be done... but that's normal... Meron bang madaling trabaho? Kahit maglinis lang ng banyo o maghugas ng pinggan mahirap na rin. It's just a matter of where we are going to course our efforts.

Life is too short to be enriching another man's company. We can't blame ourselves for this... but we must set our selves free and reclaim our own time... We need to be the masters of our own time.

What the country needs from our overseas Global Pinoys is their time... your money is no use. Bakit?... eh kasi... it will be remitted here... tapos, your family will spend it... it will circulate around... and systematically it will go into the pockets of Meralco, Globe, Smart, San Miguel Corp., Malacanang, Sta. Lucia Realties, Empire East Properties, BA Financing, SM, Banco De Oro, Congress, Senate, and then eventually to the Big Corporations that control our lives. (OPEC, GM, Toyota, Isuzu, ARAMCO, EXXON, etc.)

ok... getting carried away in my emphasizing ulit.

hehehe... anyway... siguro I am just venting out my frustrations right now... or maybe overworked... pag pasensyahan niyo na lang po.

JPDM.... here's your que. Mabuhay ang Pinoy!

Pero alam mo enhriko...I find the influx of Chinese cars and vehicles in the Philippines as positive..

Why? because it broke the Japanese, European, American and Korean stranglehold of the domestic car market...

I see alot of Chery cars running the streets now...

I see some JAC trucks moving around...

From this development, we Pinoys could learn...

And its shows that Pinoys are ready to accept other brands other than ....as what they say in Filipino..nakagisnan na....(di ba nagawa ng Hapee toothpaste yan sa market specially the lower and middle class segment of the market)

I think we already know the market for a new PHUV, FUV or re-designed jeepney....

All that we need to know more is what they really need.....

Kulang lang ay isang "down-to-earth" but very effective marketing and selling strategy (a.k.a. quality vehicles and products, affordable price,
low downpayment, affordable loan and repayment rates and freebies)

Have you noticed that practically all aspects of the common Pinoy's life is founded on (trying hard) artistry and mostly picked up from Holloywood culture?... transposed to the gay interpretation in our mass media that makes one puke when you see the odds and ends that they say is art... free expression... but really boils down to being uneducated gtrafitti... a counter culture mentality brought about by repression with he repressive culture presently prevalent with Philippine Society.

The whole rotten system needs overhauling!

The ray of sunshine is that there are trully creative Pinoys with enough principles and good culture who can b called on to working on a dramatic change... kaya there is hope our Pinoy designed cars (that are level headedly designed may make it.
