N - meaning walang gear na naka-engage of free-moving. Pero commonly hindi ginagawa ng mga driver yan kasi mawawalan ka ng "engine break".
and effect will be the same... N while downhill is ok for the AT? di masisira ang AT?
( im not into the safety at the moment, baka po kase may OT. dun lang po muna ako sa effect ng driving downhill while the transmission is at "N". just sticking to the question itself. )

Nope, nothing harm with the Transmission.
(Moreover, this is not the practice of most of the driver using modern a/t.)

The only thing compromises is your capability of engine break in case of emergency.

I always shift to N in a complete stop with the red light on. This also holds true when im driving a manual tranny. I always shift the gear in neutral in a red stoplight. My only concern is, sabi ng iba baka mabilis masira ang transmission sa madalas ng pag shift from D to N.

    A/T designed for that purpose.
The question is how hard, & how you synchronize your move when you shifts to "D" from "N"? (This really affects the life efficiency of an a/t.)

Putting to Neutral when stopped is the safety (for the trany) habit I ever known in compare with leaving to "D" mode while on stop & right foot on the break.

yes, i shift from D to N when the car is in a complete stop. I guess this habit of mine came from driving a manual tranny. Tingin ko ung mga ibang drivers na AT na ang minamaneho ever since, yan ung karamihan hindi na nag sh-shift to N they just step on the brake.

dont forget to engage the hand brake everytime you shift to N in full stop.. yung ibang drivers nakakalimutan.. mag shift to N tapos tatanggalin yung paa sa brake..

Ok lang yan as long as I'm not in the car infront of you. Kaya nga na invento ang auto tranny para di na need mag clutch/shift sa forward gears...just leave it in D and step on the gas. Why complicate matters? From my house going to work I seldom touch the shifter except when reversing and to Park.

Thanks for this thread, it's been a very good read for me.

I learned to drive from M/T cars, and almost 2yrs M/T and dina-drive ko. Then after, A/T na. Some people told me not to shift to N, from D, on quick stops and/or on stop lights due to wear and tear nga daw po ng tranny. While some told me otherwise. Kaso napansin ko na parang iba yung tunog ng engine pag naka break lang ako while on D habang naka stop sa stop light...parang gigil. So naging habbit ko na mag-shift to N pag nasa stop light or if i think lalampas ng 1minute ang stop ko despite of whatever is right/wrong. And from this thread eh okay pala yung ginagawa ko during stops..hehe!

More power to all tsikoteers and to tsikot.com!

Experimented with my 1.3 Vios' AT going downhill from Ultra. 2 is the best gear for that grade. Slow enough not to need brakes but fast enough not to annoy everyone behind me. Shift back to D na lang when on level ground uli

Based on this Pop Mech Q&A EFI engines shut off the injectors when the car is in gear, moving and you take your foot off the gas: Does Shifting Into Neutral Really Help Fuel Economy? - Popular Mechanics

In other words mas matipid sa EFI if you keep your tranny in gear while going downhill
