?Bikini Island? is MMDA?s solution to traffic congestion on EDSA-North Avenue intersection | Kicker Daily News

“Bikini Island” is MMDA’s solution to traffic congestion on EDSA-North Avenue intersection

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) will try to ease the flow of traffic along EDSA in Quezon City particularly the perennial congestion that happens at the approach, both northbound and southbound lanes, of North Avenue by constructing a “bikini island.”

A “bikini island” is a triangular rotonda that will be put in place right in the middle of the busy intersection so that vehicles traveling westbound from North Avenue would no longer have to make a U-turn to get to the opposite lane.

During the government agency’s radio program on Sunday, MMDA General Manager Emerson Carlos said, “We have observed that the chokepoints on Edsa corner North Avenue and Congressional Avenue are caused by U-turn slots in the area so as a solution, starting this week, we will adjust bus separators, remove some unloading bays and modify U-turn slot locations.”

Carlos clarified that U-turn slots will be closed only after the construction of the bikini island.

The cars from North Avenue making a U-turn to get to the opposite lane are obstructing vehicles plying EDSA which are going to Monumento.

The MMDA will also put up steel fences in front of Trinoma Mall to discourage buses from picking up passengers from the area which is also one of the reasons of heavy traffic near the EDSA-North Avenue intersection.

The steel fences will also deter commuters form waiting for buses on the road.

“We really need to instill discipline because commuters waiting on the road could be hard to control especially if there are quite a number of them,” Carlos said.

Commuters who wait for buses in “no-loading zones” would be fined. According to Carlos, it is tantamount to jaywalking.

Jaywalkers are fined P500 and required to provide community service like cleaning street canals for three hours aside from attending disaster seminar.
