at that time, the only Beetle variants available back then were the 1200, 1300 and the 1500 then the 1600 trios (Tradback, Fastback and the Variant) and the Kombi.

it is very likely that your Beetle had an engine transplant... have it verified with VWCP pangasinan chapter... i know a few at the Baguio Chapter here...
