more on mayweather sr. vs roach

“He (Mayweather Sr.) is just so jealous, I think, of me," said Roach. "He says who have I ever trained, I've never taken a fighter all the way from the start. 'I had my son.' Yeah, he got his wife pregnant with his son, but Roger (his brother) taught him how to fight."

Oh, yeah, Freddie went there. But he can't help himself, and after taking verbal shots for a few years (starting when Roach replaced Mayweather Sr. in De La Hoya's corner when he faced his son in 2007) he just had to fire back.

"Yeah, I try to be OK and not say nothing back because I gotta consider where it's coming from. I don't even dislike him, he's kinda harmless, he's a bit funny at times," Roach concedes. "And y'know, what? As a trainer, he might be OK, I don't know, I've never really worked with the guy. He's had some success, I'm sure he's good at what he does. But why does he have to attack me? I just don't understand it so much. But the thing is, am I better than him? Who cares? I have the better fighter. That's what counts."

Does Roach believe that Mayweather Sr. has made any real change in Hatton?

"You watch the Paulie Malignaggi fight and they say he boxed better in that fight. I've studied that tape over and over, he's the same guy," is Roach's opinion. "He just threw more right hands because he had success with it early in the fight. Usually, he throws more left hooks. But he didn't use his jab, he didn't box well. Paulie, he's non-threatening; let's face it, Paulie's not in the class of Manny. I mean, he couldn't even knock Paulie out. Buddy (McGirt) had to stop the fight. He wasn't impressive."

That being said, Hatton is, if anything, tough and determined. Does Roach really believe this fight is over in three rounds?

"I just said that to mess with Floyd," he admits, laughing. "He got mad. I know he's a tough guy. We're ready to go 12 hard rounds, but I do believe we'll knock him out before the fight’s over. I'm going to bet the under because I think the over/under is 10.5 rounds and I will bet that. And I will win."

spur of the moment assessment lang yun. lets wait a few more weeks and let hype die down before we assess the accomplishment in relation to the greats.

Valero: Pacquiao promised to fight me, too

    05/07/2009 | 11:33 AM

MANILA, Philippines – Don’t you forget me.

Venezuelan lightweight champ and knockout artist Edwin Valero of Venezuela squeezed his name into the long line of possible next-in-line for pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao, claiming his promotional pact with Top Rank guarantees a showdown with his stablemate.

In a report by Boxing Scene, the unbeaten WBC lightweight champ asserted that in private, the Filipino superstar himself had given his OK to his much sought matchup in the future.

"My fight with Manny Pacquiao is signed. It was one of the conditions that I gave to my manager, Jose Castillo, for me to sign with Bob Arum (Top Rank)," Boxing Scene’s Mark Vester, quoting Valero’s statement from SNOV, reported.

Owner of a 100% knockout clip in his 25 fights, Valero insisted that the only way Pacquiao could walk away from their set date would be to retire.

“This is something that he (Arum) has not revealed to the press because the fight is not mandatory, in case Pacquiao walks away. But that is the only way to avoid the fight, if he leaves boxing. So I am relaxed and working to build my name for my opportunity. It was something that was spoken about with Pacquiao and he said yes. That was in January," Valero related.

Valero, who was even Pacquiao’s guest at his Las Vegas-style 30th birthday bash in General Santos City, claimed only he can give the Pacman a run for his money when it comes to power – not Hatton as earlier advertised, or anyone between Floyd Mayweather, Jr. or Juan Manuel Marquez.

“For now I imagine that they are going to fight the winner of Floyd Mayweather and Juan Manuel Marquez, but none of those fighters have the power to surpass his defense. I would be able to offer a much better fight than the one Hatton did. I only hope that Pacquiao gives me the opportunity. I would have no problem in moving up in weight (light-welterweight) to fight him," Valero said.

Valero’ s name has been lost in the list being floated as possible foes for Pacquiao next outing for October or November. Aside from the comebacking P4P boss Mayweather and old rival Marquez, the Pacquiao camp is also said to be considering Miguel Cotto, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and Sugar Shane Mosley in the vicinity of 140-147lbs.

Newly-crowned IBO light-welterweight king Pacquiao, who is currently on his way back to the Philippines, had said he was ready to take on all comers from 140 to 147 and to some extent, 135 lbs but would leave it up to Top Rank to decide his next foe. –GMANews.TV

Dawson beats Tarver by uninanimous decision

    05/10/2009 | 11:34 AM

LAS VEGAS — Chad Dawson successfully defended his IBF and IBO light heavyweight titles by unanimously outpointing Antonio Tarver in a rematch of their October fight on Saturday.

The undefeated Dawson, who looked lackadaisical at times in fighting off several impressive combinations from Tarver, had winning scores of 116-112, 117-111 and 117-111 from the three judges.

Unlike their bout last year, when the fast-handed southpaw Tarver dominated in a unanimous victory, Saturday's fight at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino produced plenty of back-and-forth action from start to finish. -AP

that's the problem with ranking sportsmen from different generations, you won't come up with a concensus. . .you have a point, bro. . .and i'm sure you have a different list. . .

let's rank pacquiao when he has retired, that's when people will rate how good he really is

sarap talagang bumirada ni Roach! Although he really has a point there na umiiwas si Floyd Jt kay Pacman. Why announce his return (a match with JMM) on the day of the Pacman-Hatton kung interesado nga naman sya labanan si pacman.

Roach unleashes verbal punches at ‘Fraud Mayweather Jr.’

    05/10/2009 | 01:50 PM
MANILA, Philippines – After engaging trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. in a colorful verbal tussle in the lead up to the Manny Pacquiao-Ricky Hatton fight, triumphant “pound for pound trainer" Freddie Roach directed his jabs at the former’s son and namesake, Floyd Jr.

Roach, whose prized pupil Pacquiao took out Mayweather Sr.’s ward Hatton in two rounds last week, branded Floyd Jr. as “Fraud Jr." for claiming to be the world’s top P4P fighter as he gets back into the ring after a year of “retirement."

Mayweather Jr. is set to fight Juan Manuel Marquez on July 18, in a fight card dubbed "Number One/Numero Uno" at the MGM Grand. This fight between the two “No. 1s" was announced the same morning of the Pacquiao-Hatton showdown.

"So much for truth in advertising. We all know who the No. 1 pound for pound fighter is and his name is Manny Pacquiao. They can call Mayweather-Marquez No. 1 but it smells like No. 2," Roach was quoted as saying in an article by Boxing Scene’s Fred Sternburg.

Roach went on to say that the Mayweather Jr.-Marquez gig will be a yawner.

The fight stinks. Two counter-punchers waiting for the other one to make the first move is boring and proves nothing. If Mayweather wanted to prove he was the best, all he had to do was wait one day to see who won Pacquiao-Hatton before signing to fight Marquez. You might as well rename him Fraud Mayweather, Jr.," Roach said.

Fight fans and ring aficionados have been salivating over the prospect of a megafight between the comebacking Mayweather Jr and Pacquiao, two of the widely-recognized P4P kings.

And this early, ESPN’s sportscasters have already given their two cents on what would happen should the Mayweather-Pacquiao duel finally materialize.

Both Skip Bayless and Rob Parker contended that the speedy, hard-hitting Pacquiao, being at his prime, would prevail over Mayweather Jr.

“Mayweather might be able to run and duck for eight to 10 rounds. He might be able to play some pretty good defense a while but at some point, I think Mayweather will get punished and I think he will go down," Bayless said during ESPN’s 1st and 10 program. “I think he’s (Mayweather) got no shot against this guy (Pacquiao) coming off the long retirement."

Parker, for his part, said: “Pacquiao is a special guy (with all his skills) and Mayweather can’t beat him at this point."

The winner of the Mayweather- Marquez fight looms as a possible candidate for the Pacman’s next fight, most likely in October or November, although Top Rank boss Bob Arum appears lukewarm with the idea, still irked about to the timing of the fight’s announcement.

agree ba kayo kay Arum na pacquiao-cotto muna bago kay mayweather?

    http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/sports/03...ay-fight-cotto

Arum believes a Pacman-Cotto fight is much bigger than fighting the retired Floyd Mayweather Jr., who dealt Hatton his only loss.

"first of all, Manny Pacquiao has the quickest hands I have seen since the young ALI. I'm talking even quicker than Sugar Ray Leonard in his prime"
a bit exaggerated but true nonetheless!

physically cotto is not that big compared to pacman. de la hoya was even a bigger guy.

    height:
    cotto - 5'7
    pacman - 5'6 1/2
    floyd jr. - 5'8

    reach:
    cotto - 67"
    pacman - 67"
    floyd jr. - 72"

cotto used to fight at jr. welterweight (140 lbs), like floyd jr., but he couldn't make the cut anymore so he moved to welterweight (147 lbs). probably he can handle pac's hand speed which can be seen when he defeated sugar shane mosley.

cotto is known for his body attack while floyd jr. is a defensive whiz. there's going to be more action in a pacman vs. cotto fight. maybe floyd jr. will just tire pacman in the early rounds and pick up the intensity in the second half of the fight.
