San Miguel hoping old problems will go away as it starts afresh with new players, coach, name

A NEW coach, a tweaked roster, and a return to a proud name hopefully work wonders for San Miguel Beer as it kicks off its PBA Commissioner’s Cup campaign on Friday against Meralco at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

With former assistant coach Biboy Ravanes now calling the shots for the team formerly known as Petron, the Beermen will be counting on former New Jersey Nets mainstay Josh Boone to lead a resurgence when they clash with the Bolts at 5:45 p.m. in the first game of a double header.

Ravanes will be working alongside team consultant Todd Purves, who is expected to take an active role coaching on the sidelines.

San Miguel top big man June Mar Fajardo is a doubtful starter though, after spraining his left ankle last Sunday in practice.

The 6-foot-10 Fajardo, Best Player of the Conference in the last Philippine Cup, sat out the team's only tune-up game Tuesday against Barako Bull which the Beermen lost, 110-114, and still skipped the Beermen's practice on Thursday.

So soler na Ang coach. But on papers si ato pa rin dahil hinde pwedeng mag coach ng ibang team pag head coach ka ng PBA. Pero pwede pag assistant lang. Para pwede pa siya sa DLSU

Ginebra coaching set-up takes new twist as Sauler given a 'more active role'

THE coaching set-up at Barangay Ginebra had just gotten a new twist.

Longtime assistant Juno Sauler explained that he’s taken an 'active role’ in calling the shots for the Kings, stressing it was something that management wanted him to do at the start of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

Ato Agustin remains very much the head coach of the league’s most popular team as Sauler said he was merely tasked to 'implement’ the game plan during timeouts, a set-up that definitely puzzled a lot of people especially after Sauler was caught on live television mapping the plays for the Kings in their huddle during the game against Barako Bull Friday night.

“It’s just collective effort from everyone (in the coaching staff). It’s a sharing of ideas with the coaches present, so we’re active than usual,” Sauler told sports scribes just before leaving the dugout of Ginebra at the Smart Araneta Coliseum following the Kings’ 108-104 win over the Energy in overtime.

But Sauler explained the game plan was something the Ginebra coaching staff deliberated upon before and after practices to ensure they have a clear-cut approach to every game this conference.

“Before we practice and after practice. coaches have debates on what to do. It just so happened that I was tasked to have it implemented during games,” he said.

Calls for order at the Ginebra bench – with too many voices being heard during timeout huddles -- came following the Kings’ ouster in the semifinals of the Philippine Cup despite finishing the elimination round as the top seeded team.

Shortly after the disappointing finish, reports came out that Agustin resigned from his post, which San Miguel management quickly denied and said the former league MVP turned coach will still call the shots for the franchise.

Despite the sudden development, Sauler maintained he’s still committed to coaching La Salle in the coming UAAP season, saying his “active role” with the Kings is only at least for this conference as per management’s directive.

“Since it’s the offseason in the UAAP, now I have more time. They (management) asked me to have a bigger role and responsibility because during the UAAP season, I won’t be there (in the Ginebra practice),” explained the soft-spoken Sauler, who steered La Salle to the UAAP men’s championship last year.

“Ngayon, it depends on management. But I don’t know what will happen after this conference, especially when the UAAP starts.”

This is the hardest part of wanting to resign yet, management opted to put Ato into a floating status. How can a head coach be just a sitting duck during crucial moments. Insultong malaki sa kanyang kapalpakan last conf.

Former player Ali Peek open to television work as he weighs post-career options

A CAREER as a television analyst is among the options Ali Peek is considering shortly after announcing his retirement just before the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

The former St. Mary’s-California stalwart said he likes a possible stint with TV5, owned by sportsman-businessman Manny V. Pangilinan, who was also Peek’s big boss during his stint with Talk `N Text until his retirement.

Peek did the pre-game and halftime show of the match between San Miguel and Ginebra on Sunday as a guest. But the man-mountain stressed he’s ready to take on any other jobs to be offered to him by the MVP Group of companies.

“I like to work with TV5, but we’ll see, there’s different ideas,” said Peek. “Ricky Vargas (Talk ‘N Text board representative) told me that when he gets back from his trip from California, we’ll sit down and talk.

“But hopefully, I’ll do a good job. We’ll see what the bosses have to say.”

Peek admitted he knew retirement was nearing for him the moment Norman Black officially assumed the head coaching post at Talk ‘N Text.

“It’s interesting how that (retirement) happened, it’s almost like my career came full circle,” Peek recalled.

“I had an idea that when he (Black) became our head coach, this might be it. This has to be it. It won’t make sense for me to play for another coach, whether with Talk ‘N Text or another team,” added the burly big man, who played his rookie year under Black after being picked as No. 3 overall by Pop Cola during the 1998 draft.

Peek still played four conferences under Black - and even won a Philippine Cup crown last season – until he formally called it quits last month, just 13 days after he turned 39-years-old.

The veteran center said the aches on his back and knee have slowed him down the past few years, which eventually convinced him to finally hang up his playing jersey after 16 seasons in Asia’s first ever pro league.

“I mean every athlete, no matter how they perform, for me, I didn’t feel I’m meeting that standard anymore. So it’s not fair for myself, not fair for the team and not fair to the younger players who were working very hard,” said the Hawaii-born Peek, who owns career averages of 11.5 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 1.0 assist.

Peek’s distinguished PBA career includes a Best Player of the Conference award in the 2003 Invitationals while playing for Alaska, a Mythical First Team citation in 2001, and a Sportsmanship Award in the 2007-08 season.

Despite 32-point, 21-rebound game, San Miguel Beer replaces import Josh Boone | InterAksyon.com | Sports5

Despite scoring 32 points and grabbing 21 rebounds in San Miguel Beer’s last game, the team decided to go ahead and replace import Josh Boone for the PLDT Home TVolution Commissioner’s Cup.

San Miguel Beer coach Biboy Ravanes disclosed the development to InterAksyon on Monday.

“We would like to thank Josh for his effort and professionalism. He showed a lot of heart while wearing a Beerman uniform. We look forward to enjoying Josh’s future success as he will always be a member of the Beermen family,” Ravanes said.

With Boone on the squad, the Beermen have rolled to two straight wins in the conference despite the absence of star center June Mar Fajardo.

San Miguel Beer will now be reinforced by NBA D-League standout Kevin Jones, who was reported to be flying in to replace Boone before the Beermen played their first game.

Ravanes said that Jones joined some coaches for shootaround on Monday and will practice with the team on Tuesday.
