Former PBA top pick Aguilar tries out for NBA D-League (VIDEO) | Team Pilipinas

LOS ANGELES, California – Former Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) No. 1 draft pick Japeth Aguilar is still pursuing his dream of making it to the top league in the world, the National Basketball Association (NBA).
The 25-year-old Aguilar was taken with the top pick by Burger King in the 2009 PBA Rookie Draft.
He is currently in the United States and for the past two days, the 6-foot-9 Aguilar has been trying out for an NBA Development League (D-League) team, the Bakersfield Jam, in east Los Angeles.
The Jam is the minor league affiliate for the NBA's Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Clippers, Phoenix Suns and Toronto Raptors.
More than 80 basketball players attended the open try-out, which was then whittled down to the best 20 players on Sunday.
Aguilar was one of the 20 chosen players who also played in a scrimmage. Though his team lost, the Filipino player stood out with 10 points on five-of-nine shooting, while also grabbing four rebounds and blocking five shots.
Coaches in attendance praised Aguilar's performance, with Jam headcoach Will Voigt saying he sees a lot of potential for the former Smart Gilas Pilipinas mainstay.
"He's been playing as a four or a five (power forward or center) in the Philippines, so we'll have to transition him into a three (small forward). It' going to be a process for him," Voigt said.
"But he's shown flashes throughout the weekend that makes you want to see more."
Assistant head coach John Bryant called Aguilar a "very intriguing prospect," but also brought up some issues that has dogged the player since he came out of Western Kentucky University in 2009.
"I think right now he's a little too passive," Bryant said. "He needs to be the man, and mix that with some aggression."
"I want to see him throw an elbow or something. Get out of his shell a little and play loose. I think he'll really be something special," he added.
This is the second time that Aguilar has tried out for the NBA D-League. He first tried out in 2009 but was not picked in the D-League draft.
With his PBA contract having expired, Aguilar is hopeful that he will become the first Filipino to make it to the NBA.
"It was going to be now or never," Aguilar said. "If it's not for me, then at least I tried. I don't want to have any regrets, so I just want to try."
The Bakersfield Jam will not make a roster decision until mid-October. Until then, Aguilar said he is training in the gym everyday to try and improve his game.
Aguilar's agent said they have also scheduled a planned workout for him with the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday and are trying to get a workout with the Orlando Magic later this week.

baka sakali.. halimbawa yung mga places na madaming pinoy.. malaking hatak yan kung may player na pinoy.. kahit banko..
mukhang tuloy yung workout niya sa Spurs.

San Mig Coffee walks out of tuneup match against Alaska
It turns out that coffee and milk don’t always make for a perfect combination.
San Mig Coffee walked out of its tuneup match against Alaska on Tuesday at the Reyes Gym after Mixers coach Tim Cone disagreed with a call by the referees.
The Aces were leading 63-50 in the third quarter when San Mig Coffee forward Jerwin Gaco was thrown out of the game for warding off with his elbow against Alaska’s Eddie Laure. Cone vehemently protested the call before leading his team out of the court.
“Cone proceeds to Alaska bench, shakes hands of Aces coaching staff. Tapos ang laro,” wrote veteran journalist Dennis Principe on his Twitter account, where he provided updates on the game.
Cone refused to take calls by InterAKTV on the matter.
Alaska coach Luigi Trillo, meanwhile, said the call on Gaco was correct, saying that it really was flagrant.
It marked the second straight day with a tuneup game involving a PBA team being halted. On Monday, a tuneup game between Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and the Qatar national team was stopped after an altercation between Kerby Raymundo and a Qatari center.

PBA: Bolts get Salvacion, Sharma from Barako for Ballesteros
In a move to shore up their frontline, the Meralco Bolts made a trade with the Barako Bull, sending the Energy project center Jason Ballesteros, while taking back Sunday Salvacion and Carlos Sharma.
The 6'7" Ballesteros, who was selected seventh over-all at the 2011 PBA Draft, played limited minutes with the Bolts, averaging 1.33 points, 2.33 rebounds, and 0.33 blocks in 8.33 minutes in three games played.
In trading away Ballesteros, Meralco got 6'6" center Carlo Sharma who averaged 2.67 points, 1.5 rebounds in 8.17 minutes in six games played with Barako. Sharma once posted a high of 8.88 points and 4.51 rebounds in 41 games in the 2008-2009 season when the franchise was still named Red Bull.
The Bolts also got 6'3" small forward Sunday Salvacion. The nine-year veteran posted an average of 3.4 points, 0.4 rebounds, 0.2 assists in 11.4 minutes in the five games he played with Barako. It has been a steady decline in numbers for Salvacion, who once averaged a high of 10.63 points and five rebounds with the Barangay Ginebra Kings in the 2006-2007 season.
