Sa amin lang, my boy's speech and growth improved quite well after the surgery, 2 days after the surgery he started to speak in sentences for the first time... He may have been capable of doing so before, but his difficulty to maintain his breath during speech limited him to single to 2 words before he stops and breathes deliberately.

With a small kid like him na walang previous history sa mga gamot, anesthesia, we needed clearances from a pedia pulmo and pedia cardiologist din... so all in all, malamang babayaran namin mga 85% ng PF. Di pa ako nabibill ng company namin eh (they paid for everything).

Pag adult or teen, mas mura sigurado, dahil simple lang ang surgery and kaya out-patient.

Si anak kasi had to stay one night prior sa surgery (for tests, fasting etc.), surgery day itself (took 2hrs - longest 2hrs of my life), ICU for 24hrs, 3 days more sa hospital coz di sya kumakain agad and madami pa mucus nya...

    EA nga pala HMO namin...

theveed madugo pala gastos mo, thanks for the info=)

actually dental treatment are limited to TMJ correction and proper alignment, mouth breathing could also be corrected with mouthpiece.

yung case ng kid mo, swollen yun tonsils niya, that could really disrupt proper breathing, minsan tinataggal tonsils lalo kung madalas ma inflame/tonsilitis, pero me pros and con to, kung tinaggal tonsil ala na barrier yun filter what we inhale or ingest in, so dapat careful, bawal din as much as possible to go dirty places, passive smoking is a definite contraindication as well, regular check up is a must=)

Madugo talaga doc, but wala na kaming paki basta ok na yung bata, sobrang hirap sya the week before the surgery, he chokes and throws up almost 4-5x a night, of course iiyak sya dahil masakit sa throat, tapos his mucus secretion naghahalo na sa tears nya kaya sobrang sealed yung eyelashes nya with tumigas na muta every morning...

Kakaawa talaga, sobrang nagcacaptivate yung chest nya pag nagaapnea.

His case di sya inflamed, hypertrophy sya, malaki talaga. Even nung tinanggal na, when Doc Sarte showed us, the size of his tonsils equal a fully grown female in terms of size (kasing laki ng 5 peso coin almost, this is removed na, meaning, wala nang dugo and other fluids present).

According to med reports sa US and sa surgeon namin, the tonsil's filtration capabilies are more apparent to really young kids, as you grow older nababawasan ang use nya dahil sobrang dami na pumapasok sa mouth natin..

In the case of my son, the tonsils are useless already since it's not possible for him to breathe through his nose, there's zero chance of his nose's filtration to do any work, derecho sa throat and the tonsils have long been overwhelmed hence his non-stop reoccurence of colds and cough since he turned one... In short, wala nang kwenta yung tonsils nya in terms of fighting anything.

Do tonsils play in role in protecting us from infections?

Yes! But mostly when you were a baby.

In the first two to three years of childhood, these tissues "catch" infections, sampling the individual’s environment to help develop childhood immunities (antibodies).

They make a small portion of the body's defense systems and almost vanish, as we get older.

In some cases they can catch incoming germs, which cause infections. They can get infected often and swollen enough to touch each other in the back of the throat.

They are sometimes so large that they touch each other from side to side, also known as "kissing" tonsils.
What are the tonsils and adenoids?

The tonsils and adenoids are both made up of lymphatic tissue. This is the same type of tissue that is in the lymph nodes in the neck and other parts of the body. Lymph nodes are present in the body to help fight infection.

Interestingly, removal of the tonsils does not cause problems with fighting infections. There are plenty of other lymphatic tissues to help fight infection.

The tonsils are located in the back of the throat on the right and left sides and sometimes are easily visible. If the tonsils are small, often they are difficult to see. The adenoids are made up of the same type of tissue and are above the roof of the mouth, all the way behind the nose.

The tonsils and adenoids are frequently involved in infections of the throat. Frequently during these times, the tonsils and adenoids will swell.
Every 2 weeks checkup nya ngayon, buti nalang covered din ang visits.

doctors in the house please correct me if i'm wrong, the article i read was like 20 years ago and this is just from long term memory.

i read a long time ago that "bangungot", or what was then termed as "asain sleeping death syndrome" was studied by both asian and western doctors. because "bangungot" occurs usually after a "fiesta" or some festival, they then studied several men (most victims were male) in several asian countries whose families had had instances of the syndrome. they took blood samples before and after the fiesta, they also noted the activities before and after, etc etc. their findings (they got lucky because some of the mean did suffer from the syndrome over the course of the study) were:

    1. all who suffered were tired the day previous (because of preparations for the festivities)
    2. all ate large quantities of carbohydrate rich foods day before
    3. all had lower than normal potasium salts in their blood, a salt necessary for cells to get signals from nerve endings
    4. the inability to breathe was not due to any obstruction of the windpipe, but due to cramps of the muscles of the chest

they concluded that being tired and eating too much carbohydrate rich foods caused the syndrome. carbohydrates tend to attract the potasium salts from the mytochondria of the cells and the absence of this essential salt caused the cramps. no amount of attempts to wake up the victims made any difference and the men under the study were saved only by artificial respiration.

another study is this i found in the net >>> http://netinc.net.my/health/s/005.htm

the results of the studies are different, but both point to what the men ate before the attack.
