Secret to Ferrari crew’s record breaking pitstops revealed

The secrets of Ferrari’s newfound pitstop speed in the 2012 season have emerged, after it was reported recently that although the F2012 car is far from the fastest in this year’s field, it is being turned around by Ferrari’s pit crew the quickest at recent races.

Marca sports newspaper reports that the main secret is an innovative wheel nut and wheel gun design, featuring a nut that is an inherent component of the wheel rim.

After the nut is untightened, the wheel gun is then used by the operator to yank the old wheel from the spindle.

Previously, the untightening and removal of the wheel were two separate processes.

The other advantage is that when the new wheel goes on, all the wheel gun operator needs to do is pull the trigger on his gun, because the nut and washer are already in place on the new wheel.

Marca reports that Ferrari’s 2.4 second pitstop in Shanghai was an outright record.

The system was pioneered by Mercedes late last season, but Ferrari appears to be the first to perfect it.

The Spanish report also said that Red Bull, McLaren and Lotus are all now working to perfect integrated wheel/nut systems.

Actually... they were sort of okay mid-race. It's just after a blistering start, they couldn't manage the rear tires well enough. Apparently the upgrade to the rear wing didn't do its job that well... but Massa was finally bang on pace by the last two stints.

Very good race for Kimi. Unfortunately, he only got one chance to overtake Vettel, and Vettel guessed the correct side to defend on. If Lotus had used team orders to move Grosjean over earlier for Kimi (Kimi overtook Grosjean while on a better tire), then Kimi might have taken Vettel down.

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

Watched the race today here in Bahrain. Fortunately it was staged successfully with no untoward incident near the circuit. I was seated at the Turn 1 grandstand after the pitstop where a lot of action took place. Some of my personal obervations:
    1. Red Bull has really good cars, Vettel is so quick that at the early stage he had a vey wide lead until some teams made the first pitstop.
    2. Lotus Renault also had a good pace. Kimi is also quick, he could have beaten Vettel at Turn 1 but Vettel held his own.
    3. Ferrari cars are not that quick. I saw Alonso beaten by Mercedes (Rosberg, I think) on acceleration right after turn 1. Also saw him overtaken by a McLaren on the uphill climb.
    4. Mercedes has good speed too especially Rosberg.
    5. McLaren cars and Mercedes too make a lot of cracking noise during hard braking/decelaring attacking Turn 1, Red bull and Ferrari cars were braking/decelarating smoothly.
    6. D. Riesta of Force India had a good race too until Rosberg beat him at Turn 1.
Damn saw a lot of action at Turn 1. Ang hirap lang kumuha ng pics sa sobrang bilis.

Congrats to Vettel, only took him one podium to lead the championship. More tweaking on RB cars before the next race.

    Galing ng lotus.
