Suicide in the philippines
'One Pinoy commits suicide every day'
MANILA, Philippines - At least one Filipino commits suicide every day due to depression, according to a study by the Natasha Goulbourn Foundation (NGF), a non-profit, non-government organization that promotes an enhanced and better understanding of depression through purposive advocacy.
Social Welfare and Development Secretary Corazon Soliman, however, said her department has not conducted any study on the incidence of suicide in the Philippines.
“(The Department of Social Welfare and Development) DSWD has no study on that (suicide). What I mentioned was data from NGF, quoting a study that says one Filipino commits suicide every day,” Soliman said in a text message to The STAR.
As part of the celebration of Suicide Prevention Month, the NGF, in partnership with the Quezon City government, Department of Health, DSWD, University of the Philippines, Miriam College and Ateneo de Manila University, held an activity dubbed, “Walk and Light for Hope 2011,” at the UP Diliman campus yesterday.
The NGF also conducted a series of lectures on bullying and wellness at the UP’s Palma Hall.
According to the World Health Organization, the Philippines has a relatively low suicide rate.
Based on a study conducted by WHO in 1993, an average of 2.5 males and 1.7 females among 100,000 Filipinos commit suicide.

"Suicide is Painless" by Johnny Mandel - M*A*S*H Lyrics
M*A*S*H Lyrics
[ from Television/TV Theme Lyrics - 50's, 60's, 70's Soundtrack ]
Through early morning fog I see
visions of the things to be
the pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see...
[chorus]:
That suicide is painless
It brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.
I try to find a way to make
all our little joys relate
without that ever-present hate
but now I know that it's too late, and...
[Chorus]
The game of life is hard to play
I'm gonna lose it anyway
The losing card I'll someday lay
so this is all I have to say.
[Chorus]
The only way to win is cheat
And lay it down before I'm beat
and to another give my seat
for that's the only painless feat.
[Chorus]
MASH
The sword of time will pierce our skins
It doesn't hurt when it begins
But as it works its way on in
The pain grows stronger...watch it grin, but...
[Chorus]
A brave man once requested me
to answer questions that are key
'is it to be or not to be'
and I replied 'oh why ask me?'
'Cause suicide is painless
it brings on many changes
and I can take or leave it if I please.
...and you can do the same thing if you choose

Of course, when they finally raise our educational level to Japanese or Korean quality (extra years, extra work, etcetera), that suicide rate is bound to go up to Japanese/Korean levels of suicide.
Re: Suicide in the philippines
maybe it's the judeo-christian background
pinoys see suicide as sin. and pinoys are prayerful
kahit gaano kahirap ang buhay pinoys see hope
Re: Suicide in the philippines
basta ba hindi sila nandadamay e. ang mahirap yung pag nag-suicide e sumisigaw muna ng "allahu akbar!"
Re: Suicide in the philippines
Maybe religion per se, not just Judeo-Christian religion. Muslim Pakistan has also a low suicide rate...
Quote:
Pakistan has the lowest estimated prevalence of less than 3
per 100,000, followed by Thailand at 7.3 per 100,000. Australia, Malaysia, New
Zealand and Singapore have low to medium rates of between 9.9 and 13.1 per
100,000. Higher rates of above 15 per 100,000 are seen in China, Hong Kong Special
Administrative Region (Hong Kong SAR), and India and still higher rates of above 20
per 100,000 are seen in China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and Sri Lanka.

one of my Filipino friends here in Japan also have that observation.
The Japanese, she says, doesn't have religion hence it is easy for them to end their life. No heaven or hell.
(Note: japan has lots of temples, shinto shrines but they don't really practice it. They pray mostly to their ancestors).
Re: Suicide in the philippines
Yup! ang pinoy kahit sobrang hirap na hndi sumusuko kaya kahit mamulubi or mamalimos ay hindi sila nwawalan ng pag-asa, they still make ways for their living. it was the other way around, mas marami pang nakakapatay dito pag naddepress or nappressure. dahil s mga problema.

other Asians take life too seriously
pinoys don't

we're always surrounded by family and friends
meron support system
Re: Suicide in the philippines
Ang matinong suicide becaue of shame yung ginagawa ng chinese and japanese na seppuku/harikiri. Masakit yun dahil wala anesthesia at dahan dahan mo wawasakin tiyan mo. (Disembowelment)
Eh sa pinas kung baril lang or iinom ng gamot eh hindi gaano masakit na suicide yun. Escaping pain nga usually cause ng suicide.
Re: Suicide in the philippines

Re: Suicide in the philippines
Re: Suicide in the philippines

Labo no? In most cases they get a bad case of ulcers and other stuff related to the bad ingestion... but they live on and have a hospital bill to boot.
Some committed suicide also by the graves of someone they respected (i.e. Angelo Reyes, Ted Borlongan); someone i personally knew also did that (shot himself by the grave of his grandparents).
I don't know how true this is exactly as a whole but in one of the universities, when they profiled student suicides, the students were usually more of the artistically inclined while there were no cases of athletes or sport inclined suicides. When my younger brother was hit by depression before (due to the separation of our parents and the sudden demise of our dad), he turned to sports as an outlet and it helped him quite a lot.
Re: Suicide in the philippines
It's not the lack of religion per se that makes suicide more prevalent in Japan... If religion alone eliminates suicide risk, you wouldn't have suicide bombers.
It's the culturally and religiously transmitted values that affect suicide risk. In Japan, honor is valued more than life. In Islam, young men are promised a better life (plus a platoon of virgins) in the afterlife if they die honorably. In Christianity, suicide is regarded as a sin, thus no matter what the reason, if you commit suicide, you're going to hell.
Typical student suicides are inept and incompetent because they're more of an attention-getting behaviour than Japanese suicides, where the student really, really, REALLY wants to die.

i think somebody said "all poets are mad"
artistic people tend to have mood disorders
i guess that's why they're unusually creative in the first place coz they experience extreme emotions... that's where they get their ideas

well ya it's culture
Japanese society is more tolerant of suicide
it's viewed as an honorable act
Re: Suicide in the philippines
basta pag nag-suicide ka, automatic sa HELL ang punta mo, no matter how good / kind / religious you are in real life.
