The Toyota Group of Export Suppliers is optimistic to achieve its target of $1 billion export sales in 2014.

The japanese automaker recently reported this to Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) director general Lilia De Lima during the Group’s regular year-end meeting with PEZA.

This year, the current estimate is that exports will reach at least US$954 million.

The upbeat outlook is based on 2014 plans shared by individual suppliers. Among those who disclosed expansion plans starting 2014 include TRP, Inc., Philippine HKR, Inc., Philippine Auto Components, Inc., Jeco Autoparts Philippines, Inc., Koyo Manufacturing (Phils.) Corporation, and Technol Eight Philippines Corporation.

PEZA Director General De Lima affirmed suppliers saying, “Rest assured that PEZA will continue to support you in the processing of your requirements as you carry on with additional investments and expansion projects.”

Tokai Rika Co. Ltd., Japan’s leading manufacturer of automotive switches and Toyota global’s biggest supplier, is expanding its Philippine plant with P1 billion-worth of investments on strong demand for cars from North America and Asean markets.

Tokai Rika Philippines (TRP) president Michio Aoki said during groundbreaking ceremony for its fourth expansion on a 6,431 square meter lot on its 2-hectare facility inside the Toyota Industrial Estate in Sta. Rosa, Laguna will generate $100 million in exports over a period of three years.

Aoki also said the expansion project, which has been approved by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority, will employ 300 workers in addition to its existing 982 workforce. TRP’s expansion project is expected to be completed this year.

“This is a very important long-term commitment to global our switches production and is in line with our goal to become the world’s number one automotive switch producer,” he added.

Aoki said the expansion program will increase its capacity by 50 percent and expand its product line up for a wide variety of automotive switches.

By January, 2015, TRP’s monthly production will hit 2 million pieces from the current 1.4 million. These automotive switches include 10 types of small automotive switches such as back up lamp switches, tire monitor switches, power seat and blower switches. TRP also produces 10 types of lever combination switches and 6 types and 6 power window switches. Production of new level combination switches will start in June. New products include multi-function and steering wheel switches.

Majority of its production are exported to North America for Toyota, GM, Ford and Subaru. Toyota US accounts for 70 to 80 percent of its total US exports.

In ASEAN, majority of its switches go to the bustling car production for Toyota, Suzuki, and Mazda in the huge Indonesian market.

A small portion of its switches are supplied to Toyota Motor Philippines for its local assembly of Innova and Vios.

Some products are supplied to Toyota, Suzuki and Mazda in Japan. Tokai Rika is headquartered in Nagoya, Japan, which is also home of Toyota its single biggest client for automotive switches.

Toyota Motor Philippines president Michinobu Sugata cited the timing of Tokai Rika’s expansion stating this would help Toyota’s new requirement for the US market in 2015. So far, Tokai Rika has 33 subsidiaries in 15 countries.
