PhUV Inc., the business unit of the Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Association of the Philippines, said major universities, resorts, malls and theme parks have expressed interest to acquire electric jeepneys after a successful pilot test of the vehicle.
Ferdinand Raquelsantos, president of PhUV, said plans to go into mass production for the e-jeepney and e-tricycle would push through following the warm response of the market.
“The truth is our orders and inquiries so far are for large school campuses, resorts, golf and country clubs, villages, farm lands, theme parks, malls and even for mobile ads purposes. But we will prioritize the LGUs [local government units] as we want to also disperse the technology to the countryside as well,” said Raquelsantos, in a statement.
MVMAP officer Rommel Juan said Green Renewable Independent Power Producers Inc., the main proponent of the Climate Friendly Cities Program funded by the Doen Foundation of Netherlands, had ordered 12 units for distribution to partner local government units, including Makati, Puerto Princesa and Bacolod.

De La Salle University Dasmarinas had also ordered one unit.
“We are targeting to service resorts in Boracay although no deals with specific resorts have been firmed up to date. We estimate all these orders to be supplied middle of next year,” said Juan.
He declined to name the other parties pending finalization of the deals.

PhUV is the first to locally design, fabricate, assemble and actually put on the road a locally-assembled e-jeepney. The unit is now undergoing more test runs at the Legaspi Village in Makati.
The company said it was also optmisitic its partnership with Chinese suppliers will speed up initiatives to deploy more electric jeepneys and tricycles in Metro Manila and other cities.
Raquelsantos said the company was now capable of meeting increased e-jeepney orders after the pilot test.
Local parts makers were part of the business delegation during the recent China visit of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. The parts makers tapped their Chinese counterparts for help in the e-jeepney initiative.
“The e-jeepney technology is a tested vehicle in some parts of the globe and is very popular in China, one of the more advanced countries in terms of electric vehicle development. The e-jeepney base model that Greentec China is supplying to us can seat 14 persons, climb elevations of up to 20-percent grade and withstand flooded streets of up to one foot. This is a performance that I believe is at par with that of a regular public utility jeepney,” said Raquelsantos.
Commuters will pay the same fare as with conventional jeepneys once fully integrated with the transport system. Commuters now can ride the e-jeepneys, which ply select routes within the Makati commercial business district, for free.
