On a somewhat related note: Ed Sarao just posted a few pics of their new 3D modeling system. They're trying it out on a bare old-school jeepney body. I'm not sure where this is going but props to them for trying to drag this old dinosaur kicking and screaming into the information age.

Trying to bring the old school jeepney body to something modern is just like trying to put perfume on a turd. At the end of the day, it is still a turd.

Although it might be commendable for Ed Sarao to trying something modern, but given Sarao's method of production (hand building), it does not meet to modern requirements of efficiency in production in vehicles.

That's one path they can take. If they can translate their models into dies then they're onto something. Think Aston Martin (hand-beaten panels) vs Vios (ubiquitous). Economies of scale will still prevail though.

It is doubtful if Sarao have the funds to make steel mold dies.

It would be interesting to see those future e-jeepneys traverse Halsema highway up north, loaded up to the roof with people and produce.

Electric jeepneys are not meant for really long distance. Only for within the city and for short loops only.

MANILA, Philippines – MANILA, Philippines – Is this being too optimistic for a developing country that has learned to make do with the cheap and the old?

Electric vehicle manufacturers, both local and foreign, beg to differ.

In the 3rd Philippine Electric Vehicle Summit held in Pasig City on Thursday, February 27, more than 500 participants from all over the world gathered to celebrate the achievements of the electric vehicle (EV) industry. The event gathered major industry players, manufacturers, NGOs, the academe, and government officials.

"The Philippines is at the center right now. We can be the hub for electric vehicle production in the region," said Rommel Juan, president of the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP).

To prove his point, he announced the ambitious industry target of putting one million electric vehicles on Philippine roads by 2020.

"It's not impossible because this includes two-wheelers like electric bikes, electric motorcycles, 3-wheelers like electric tricycles, and the e-jeepneys," Juan said.
