    Green passports valid until expiration

MANILA, Philippines -- The green passports issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) are still valid until their date of expiration, Assistant Secretary for Consular Affairs Domingo Lucenario said Thursday.

In an interview, Lucenario belied the news circulating in e-mail groups that those who renew their green passports will get new ones valid only until the end of 2009.

He said he has already requested the international community -- through the Philippines’ foreign posts and the foreign embassies based here -- to continue recognizing the green passports, which are not machine-readable.

At the same time, he encouraged all Filipinos with valid green passports to apply for machine-readable passports to avoid being inconvenienced at various points of exit and entry worldwide.

According to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), all countries must issue machine-readable passports by April 1, 2010. The Philippines started issuing the new travel documents starting September 2007.

"The green non-machine readable passports issued before the ICAO deadline are valid until their expiration," he said.

Thanks! Then I'll just wait for further announcements. Baka marami pang changes na mangyayari before my passport expires.

It's good that they've issued a public advisory about this.

However, ICAO is ICAO. I'd prioritize that over some government (a very corrupt one) who practically has no power whatsoever against another when you get barred from entering their country because of ICAO guidelines.

I'd save myself from the hassle and renew instead.

But will the DFA allow the renewal of passports which are still valid for a few years?

11 August 2009 – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) launched today the Philippine ePassport that will make the country at par with developed countries.

No other than President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was the recipient of the first ePassport presented to her by DFA Secretary Alberto G. Romulo in ceremonies held at the DFA Auditorium coinciding with the Department’s 111th Founding Day anniversary.

President Arroyo’s ePassport bears the serial number EA0000001. To illustrate its features, the President scanned her ePassport on the passport reader which revealed her biometric information, digital signature and photograph.

A joint project of the DFA and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), the issuance of the ePassport makes the Philippines compliant with international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), of which it is a member.

Filipino travellers and migrant workers stand to benefit the most from the globally-compliant ePassport currently being used in over 60 countries.

The ePassport’s security features have been enhanced with a hidden encoded image, an ultra-thin, holographic laminate; and a tamper-proof electronic microchip.

Its Integrated Circuit (IC) chip stores the passport holder’s photograph and other personal data for easy verification of identity and is fully inter-operable which means that the chip can be read by border control officials in other countries using a passport chip reader.

The ePassport will facilitate and hasten the entry formalities in other countries of OCWs, Filipinos residing in other countries and Filipino travelers, as well as further cut down on opportunities for passport fraud and tampering.

Despite its advanced security features, the Philippine ePassport will be available for a fee of P950, making it one of the lowest-priced ePassports in the world.

Filipino passport applicants may still choose between the ePassport OR the machine readable passport (MRP) currently priced at P500.

The ePassport project is part of the DFA’s passport modernization program which started in 2007 with the launch of the machine readable passport. To date, about four million MRPs have been issued.

Initially, application for the ePassport will be on appointment basis. Full implementation of the project will take place in the next three months.

For those who are planning to obtain a job or start a business after they retire to the Philippines, dual citizenship is a must. Whereas there are various residency options for a non.citizen to retire in the Philippines, there are numerous benefits to such a retire to acquire dual citizenship in the Philippines.

In 2007, we issued 228,430 MRPs, 2 years ahead of the ICAO deadline.
In 2008, 2,097,383 MRPs were issued.
From January to August 9, 2009, 1,500,402 MRPs have been issued and delivered.
From 2007 to date, the DFA has issued and delivered a total of 3,826,215 MRPs.

We have raised our standard one level more above the MRP - the state of the art Philippine ePassport!
The ePassport takes the MRP to the next higher level and standard in travel documents: an embedded microchip containing the following:
    · Data essential in verifying the passport holder's identity, including the holder's personal data, biometrics and digital signature.
This chip is interoperable, that is to say, it can be read by any standard passport machine reader in border controls worldwide.
    • A complex laminate that protects the datapage against tampering;
    • Customized invisible images on every page; and
    • A hidden and coded technology that allows the encoding of the holder's name and passport number on the passport photo.
This isworld class ePassport at its best!
They are now currently issuing e-Passports.

Need kasi makuha ng DFA biometrics ng lahat ng nag-aapply ng passport. Kaya ganyan katagal or kabagal ang process. But I hope sa pagrenew ng e-passport, hindi na ganyan katagal.
