MANILA, Philippines - Hundreds of informal settlers clashed with local authorities to stop the impending demolition of thousands of shanties near Trinoma Mall along Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) Thursday morning.

Residents of Sitio San Roque, Barangay Bagong Pag-Asa in Quezon City barricaded their homes before dawn after a National Housing Authority deadline for them to vacate the area ended Thursday.

At around 8:45 a.m., residents started attacking the NHA's demolition team using rocks and debris. Members of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Quezon City Police District's anti-riot team were also attacked by the residents.

The NHA said it has already provided a relocation site for the informal settler in Rizal province but the residents still refused to leave their shanties.

Radio dzMM said heavy traffic was experienced on the northbound lane of EDSA -- from SM North and Trinoma to Cubao area -- because of the tension at the demolition site.

MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino, meanwhile, clarified during a radio dzMM interview that his agency is not directly involved in the demolition.

Tolentino said the MMDA was just asked by the NHA to man traffic around the demolition site.

Youth group Anakbayan earlier said the demolition is expected to displace at least 16,000 families.

It said the city government and Ayala Corp. plans to develop the Quezon City's North Triangle area to a central business district modeled after the Makati business district.

Anakbayan said its members joined the residents in putting up barricades around the Sitio San Roque community to resist the demolition. –

a few weeks back there was also a clearing operation at new manila. some of the squatters eventually settled along the sidewalks....

that operation should take several days. d kaya in one day iyan.

i doubt. there is a reason why that area seems like Hell now. it's the same reason why Jacky Chan loved HK and the Shangrila located in Ortigas edsa, kasi eye of the dragon ang mga lugar na ito swerte.

take for example, Cubao. si Megaworld ang nag-dedevelop nyan ngaun, but even for Andrew Tan na sobrang galing na-develop ang Eastwood, Mckinley, Burgos Circle etc. hindi nya kinaya ang kamalasan ng Cubao.

malas ang Cubao, dagdag mo pa yun mga Araneta na puro kabig at walang pakelam sa mga kasama nila sa buhay mapa-Miss Universe contestants or tenants sa lugar nila ...
