i think your truck has an orig R2 diesel engine. power and performance comes from different aspects, i.e. condition of engine, clutch, injectors, fuel pump and filter, tire size and alignment, etc.. but considering the truck is in A1 condition, it would be a little less powerful than the fuego and frontier. yes, an aftermarket air filter (K&N, Finer Filter, or Simota) will be the cheapest way of adding a few ponies (2-7hp approx?).. diesel engines like more air for more power!

for the exhaust, a larger diameter exhaust pipe from the manifold to the exhaust tip would not necessarily give more power. in fact, it can lose power! exhaust manifold and tubing/piping sizes should and will be determined and based on the engine size. get more information from your favorite exhaust shop. try nodalo's, mufflerland, or SMT.

in my opinion, it's best to make an engine swap. bborces just had his red/maroon B2200 R2 engine swapped with an RF turbo (japan). he said (at our first eb) that there was no problem in hitting 140kph. he's also planning to add an intercooler! a WL-T from a ford ranger would also do the trick!

duskylim's B2500 has alcohol injection. some (at the first eb) test drove his truck and said that the pulling power is better than their b-series! he also gave samples of his fuel additive -- i guess this alone improves the combustion. imagine if you have a turbo with alcohol injection. adrenalin!!

thanks for the quick reply sir! but i doubt we will meet anytime soon, coz im from Cagayan de Oro! hehehe! my b2200 has a hard starting issue, and maybe the tires are over-sized (235/70/15s). i plan to use smaller tires and ill have the fuel system fixed soon, i suspect its the injectors.

sir, as to the exhaust system, my b16 civic hatch runs a 2in pipe, i was thinking the same would apply to the R2 engine kasi for gas engines, 2.0 liter and up use a 2.5in pipes. i hope diesels are like this too.

ill try to post pics of my ride soon!

ps: this is my 1st mazda and i was really surprised of its roomyness!

* duskylim: engine master? what can you say about the hardstart and fuel system issue?

* pumpman: tire size is just fine. with regard to the exhaust, it is best to have nodalo's, mufflerland, or any reputable exhaust system specialist there to take a look and give you information/suggestions on how to modify the exhaust manifold and piping. mine's a 2.6-litre petrol with 2.5" piping.

* bborces: what's the size of your rf turbo's exhaust manifold and piping?

To those who drove my pickup:

Guys - there is a misunderstanding - the Alcohol Injection was NOT ON during your test drives!!!

The switch for the Alcohol injection is in the upper left part of the dashboard and the computer box beside the steering wheel will light up like a Christmas tree when turned on.

All that performance was just the engine tuning and the diesel fuel additive.

Remember get the basics right and use the additive and your truck should perform similarly.

I'm actually disappointed with the Alcohol injection - I need to run nearly pure methanol (expensive) to get results.

BTW I filled up with Total diesel fuel (and additive) just after our EB - I'm getting about 11.5 - 12 km/liter city driving kasama na hataw natin.

Not bad if I do say so myself.

Welcome to our thread! Great to have you on board.

Sir, your suspicions are correct, the standard tires are 215 R/70 14 not 15. The bigger tire will cost you some acceleration and performance.

As to the sluggish performance, try to get the basics right first.

1) Replace the air filter, oil filter and fuel filter with every oil change. Clean the air filter every 1000 km (or less depending on conditions).

2) Change oil with a good oil, every 5000 km - any oil rated SAE 15W-40 and API CI or higher is a good oil.

3) Make sure you have no air leaks or water in the fuel lines.

4) Have a trusted calibration specialist clean out the filter on the injection pump (if you don't know how to do this yourself) and check the pump.

5) Make sure your valves are adjusted properly, your tires have the right pressure and your wheels are aligned.

6) As to the exhaust pipe size - is your engine turbo or non-turbo (like mine)? If non-turbo, 2.0 inches (ID) is enough, if turbo use 2.5 inches (ID).

A lot of people are too enthusiastic and oversize the exhaust system - this is worse for a gas vs a diesel engine, keep to those sizes and a good muffler - the 'turbo' muffler is a good design.

Too large and free-flowing an exhaust pipe and system will remove your low-end torque and kill your fuel economy - No Good for a work truck.

Balance is the keyword in exhaust systems.

If all of the above does not fix your hard starting replace your glow plugs.

use semi-synthetic motor oil and VIC oil filters (these don't crack/break). if you currently have 15" wheels, just get 215/75 tires. it should increase the truck's acceleration -- or stick with the 235/75 with 15x7 rims for looks. i'm using 31x10.5 MT+ tires though. hehe.

do not forget engine/water temp too as it affects your trucks performance. use only distilled water (absolute or wilkins) and a bottle of shell coolant. replace every 6 months-1year.

transmission and rear axle oils? yes, these also need to be replaced every year or two or depending on the manufacturer's standards. since our trucks are more than 10years old, i guess it's better to have frequent fluid changes. SAE90 oil is cheap anyway. we only need 2 litres for the rear axle and 7 (to 12 for 4wd) litres for the transmission.

As to axle and transmission oils, well there are certain brands that are rated SAE 80 or SAE 85, these are preferable to the SAE 90 oils as they are a little less viscous, meaning they are thinner and will generate less friction in your pickup.

One caveat however, if you regularly use your pick-up for carrying heavy loads, stick with the SAE 90 oil, it will protect your axles and transmission better, mainly due to the fact that most differentials now have hypoid-type (sliding) gears rather than contact-type gears.
