I was talking to a Toyota salesman this afternoon and I asked him if he thought the price of diesel here in the Phil. would overtake that of gas. Sabi nya, he thinks not kasi daw, unlike in the US, diesel here is not as refined. Kung baga, sa US, ang diesel dun ay one of the first by-products of oil refineries so, high ang quality. Dito daw, ang diesel, one of the last by-products so, di gaano maganda ang quality. As he put it, "latak" daw . Of course, he's not an oil expert but he's been in the car sales business for quite a time. Sabi pa nya, speaking from experience, Shell's diesel seems better than Petron's while Petron's unleaded seems better than Shell's and Caltex's. So, I guess, he's relatively well educated as far as oil products are concerned. I hope someone in this forum is from the oil business and can shed light on this ... maybe to help pretty07 decide what car to buy (and me too! )

Actually, US diesel was, until just a year or two ago... much dirtier than European diesel.

Diesel all comes from the same source, whether in the US, Europe or here. All diesel comes from the same crude. Our problem here is that our refineries and storage containers aren't that well-maintained, so we have more impurities and water.

While I've seen modern CRDis lose performance from bad diesel and start smoking, Hyundai's injector systems seem relatively robust... but of course, when you get really dirty diesel, there are no assurances how long they'll run well...

If you live in the Metro or close by and always fill your diesel tank from a "clean" station, then a CRDi (TDCi, DiD, D4D, blah blah blah) vehicle may just be worth it. Even if diesel and gasoline are the same price, a diesel engine will drink less fuel than a gasoline engine of the same power in a vehicle of the same size.

If you're not sure about the source of your fuel, a gasoline engine might be less problematic (I say "might" because they're still affected by poor gasoline quality... only to a much lesser degree)... or you could buy a Crosswind. Despite being Euro II compliant, the current Crosswind's fuel system is practically prehistoric. Get too much water in your diesel with a CRDi and you'll get a check engine light, a clogged filter and (sometimes) a busted fuel pump. Get too much water in a Crosswind and all you'll get is white smoke...

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...
