Declining power of hyundai diesel engines
Has anyone noticed the declining power of your diesel engine? My friend with a sta fe and my tucson feel that the power of our cars arent as strong when it was new. Although wala naman figures like time slips or dyno runs that can prove this, pero we felt the drop in power.
Anybody here with a similar experience?
Re: Declining power of hyundai diesel engines
i'll just ask the basic Qs so the pros can answer better later  what's your odometer reading? any recent event that happened prior to the reduction of power (i.e. PMS, accident, engine wash, dust cloud, sandstorm, etc)?
Re: Declining power of hyundai diesel engines
Miy tucson is at 11500kms, nothing that i can relate to the loss in power. Regular PMS sa hyundai, using motul oil which i saw them pour in. Inisip ko baka pinalitan ng pangit na oil pero i saw them use my oil naman. Dont get me wrong, malakas pa rin naman yung car pero it was a lot stronger nung nasa 1000-3000kms pa lang mileage. Di kaya injectors are dirty? I saw them pour in the diesel system cleaner din naman when i had my 10k pms. Weird lang kase its 2 of us na ganito.

sharing same sentiments.

Could be any number of things... injectors getting clogged, fuel filter... water contamination or sediment contamination of the fuel system... EGR getting stuck...
I'd go with the EGR first, then go on to look at the other things.

actually, it still pulls great. Kahapon lang, it cruised at SLEX at steady pace 150-160kph without sweat. But I just felt it loss a few ticks getting to that speed. I felt, kung tama ako. Kasi I've been chatting few hardcore Accent drivers (*ahem* taxi drivers ;) ) At sabi nila, yung turbo raw ng Accent is very sensitive sa maintenance, sa carpool nila, meron talagang mechanic dedicated sa maintenance ng turbo nila. He actually even gave me their address kasi tumatanggap daw yung carpool nila ng private customers, pati sa auto modified sa banawe, they specialize on Hyundai Accents.
Re: Declining power of hyundai diesel engines
EGR, exhaust gas recirculation. Other turbodiesel owners disconnect this... they swear it gives better power and economy.
EGR pumps exhaust gas back into the combustion chamber for reasons of emissions. Over time, soot builds up on this and it sometimes gets stuck open, leading to a loss of power.

Variable Geometry turbos are indeed very sensitive. If the car is over 100k kms, might be a good idea to have it checked, but I wouldn't have it taken apart if the car functions fine otherwise. Sayang lang.

kailangan talaga ng correct oil rating and cool down ng turbo. most taxi drivers arent knowledgeable about turbo maintenance thats why nasisira agad yung turbo.
to TS: have you checked your air filter already? baka clogged na din.
also, using the wrong API ratings of oil will clogged the EGR.

quite ironically, I was even informed by those cab drivers regarding those matters. ;) cool nga eh. they seem to indeed really know what they are talking about. where is the EGR located? is it the valve that cuts off power when you hit the redline? cos at one time, i miss shifted and went pass the redline, pero nag power cut off lang hindi naman sya pumasok sa redline, parang naharang yung throttle input.

depends siguro sa taxi driver. nope, thats not the EGR. engine limiter yun. to protect the engine from over revving.
ganito itsura ng clogged EGR.

ganito naman itsura ng EGR valve.

Re: Declining power of hyundai diesel engines
What happens if you have clogged egr? Do you just clean it or replace it? Pitstop says replacement cost for grand starex egr is around 14k. Ang mahal.
Re: Declining power of hyundai diesel engines
You can clean it. If that doesn't help, replace.

agree. try to clean it first. just google it. maraming tutorials online on how to clean it. the thing with modern diesel engines, you can not simply block the EGR. it will send error codes sa ECU. unlike mga mechanical injection pumps, no issues.
Re: Declining power of hyundai diesel engines
Depends on the engine. Apparently, you can do this successfully on the Navara... but I can't vouch for the engine's longevity if you do.
Re: Declining power of hyundai diesel engines
Check kung may singaw ang hose between turbo charger & intake manifold, kung wala then maybe its time to change fuel filter. Mas malamang ang culprit ay fuel filter as per my own experience. At 25K KM odometer I checked the egr, malinis pa siya. Last 55K++ Km was the 4th fuel filter renewal :)
Re: Declining power of hyundai diesel engines
Iniisip ko nga na i-disconnect yung egr kaso the check engine light was on. Mukhang mahirap yata bypass.
Re: Declining power of hyundai diesel engines
question lang mga peeps who already cleaned the egr on their SF, did you guys experienced any v-belt noise/belt tensioner vibrations when the egr was dirty? I've been looking for a solution kasi for my SF serpentine belt noise for quite some time. the noise disappears when I step on the accelerator to increase engine speed from idle to just about 50plus rpm above idle. para bang kinakapos ang engine power at idle kaya naghe-hesitate ang makina leading to the noise in the belt. btw, I've changed belt and belt tensioners a few times already.
Re: Declining power of hyundai diesel engines

Check sir yung belt tension, if ok check the pulley's. baka me slip na yung tinatawag ng "segunyal" ng mga mekaniko... happened to me once though not SF but all cars have pulleys...
Re: Declining power of hyundai diesel engines
loss of power is due to stop and go daily traffic sa tingen ko. ang SF ko pag tinakbo ko ng out of town say NLEX, the next day mas responsive ang makina. so what i do right now is just floor it lagi di bale na mag-suffer FC, it improves. btw, my 6 years old SF is only 36Tkm. ewan ko yun sa inyo, baka kasi high mileage na kayo
