Our first car, a 83' Corolla Liftback SE, was my first real drive (dunno when or how young I was when I held on to a moving Kharmanghia of my uncle. Though I would have loved driving my uncle's Chevy Malibu though)

Anyway, driving skills I had to learn was clutch control (like moving the car with only the clutch), throttle/clutch balance (usually at flyovers during traffic)... and defensive driving (the big test back then for me was driving through Quiapo)...

Disengage the handbrake before you drive.....

Do not ride on the clutch pedal....

Jeepneys (then) were the "King Of The Road", so do not tailgate them.....
Now, its the pedicabs and tricycles.... They dictate the traffic flow and they stop anywhere they like....

Wearing of seatbelts is pang-porma (then).....

If you can do a 180deg, somebody's bound to do 360deg,- whew!

If you can 'borrow' the car at night, without your parents knowing it,- then you're 'cool'.....

'Lowered cars' are 'neat'- every hump in the village is 'kissed',- I still see this nowadays and this time, I am the one who is annoyed....hehehe

Lahat na yata ng curses under heaven nasabi na nya during my training. He chose the Ford Cortina for me but because of its wide body, I bumped objects around moving or stationary Duon kami sa San Juan nag start; Wilson and Little Baguio for hanging and parking. Best area ito for me to learn this skill because of its hill and valley topographical orientation plus some areas were isolated from traffic. So ayun buong magdamag a sweaty day of clutch and throttle- bihira yung break na parang bang tinotorture ako ng aking Dad. On that day, my Dad didn't utter a single expletive at least directed towards me which goes to show that it was well worth the trouble of mastering all the basics to give you the confidence you'll need on the road. No pain, no gain lang kaibigan.

pero honestly, di nga maiiwasan. i remember when i'm instructing my kid brother how to drive, alangya puro expletives din ang bukambibig ko. ganun pala yun. sabi ko sa sarili ko di ko gagawin yun e, kaya lang talaga palang ganun pag ikaw na ang nagtuturo...

    totoy days sa driving... (1983)

    - naka-yapak magmaneho.
    - walang humps-humps sa akin noon. (kablag!!!)
