It depends on the engine and tranny option for the Focus. Those models with MT trannies are not as problematic as those with the Powershift DCT tranny. The gas models with the traditional AT tranny are less worrisome also. For those Focus with Powershift DCT trannies, a few did have catastrophic tranny failures but a lot of them are still running on the road. From a maintenance perspective, it just happens that only a few local mechanics are well-schooled in fixing DCT trannies since it is not a common option for Asian cars. DCT or DSG is more common with Euro cars. As we all know, Ford cars are designed in Europe while their SUVs and trucks are designed in the US or Australia.
If you prefer MT and a diesel, a Focus TDCI MT is a good bargain for used car buyers.
Now, if you prefer something Japanese, you can never go wrong with a Civic or Altis. They are still not free of issues (like the engine support issue with the Civic FD) but the ease of maintenance is a plus for them. If you want something cheaper, a Sentra N16 or Mazda3 will be worth considering since their resale value is lower than the Civic or Altis.
As the owner of an 11 year old FD 1.8 AT that is still seeing use 3-7 days a week:
Repair history namin:
1. Engine Support (1 of the 3) die every 3-4 years.
2. Starter motor rebuilt
3. Rear Wheel bearing replaced
4. Front shock absorbers replaced
5. Power steering high pressure hoses replaced
6. AC Pulley making a weird sound at present -- sabi ni speedyfix hindi pa raw kailangan palitan until the AC loses its temperature
7. Window motors needed a little fixing
Recommendations for FDs will be in this order assuming automatic hanap mo: 2.0S-L 2007-2008 OR 1.8S 2009-2012, 2.0S 2009-2012, 1.8S 2006-2008
For a Corolla of the same age:
1.6L ZZ engine tends to sludge up.
You may want to find a 1ZR engine (Corolla 10th gen facelift) 1.6G/V
Recommendations: 2009-2011 1.6V / 2.0, 2007-2008 1.8V (medyo rare), all others
Get the V variant if maliit yung price diff vs the G variants
this is the sort of thing that's making me hesitate in getting a FORD
eh kung ecosport m/t kaya?![]()
I think the hatchback came only with the 1.6L engine. The 2.0L Mazda3 came in sedan form with sunroof and stock 17" rims.
If you want something different for something around 200k to 300k, maybe you can consider the Mazda6 2.3L 2006-2008 or the Honda Accord 7th gen 2003-2007. Fuel consumption would be about the same as the 2.0L compacts but you get bigger interior space and more powerful engines. Another option is the Civic ES 2.0L 2004-2005 but its platform is older.
Thanks!
Am now choosing between Altis 1.6V/G (2009-2011) or Civic 1.8s (2006-2009).
Was almost about to consider a Mazda 3 2.0, but read na it has lackluster FC compared to the two mentioned above.
Almost considered the Accord, the 2003-2007 design seems to have not aged at all, but ultimately did not because of FC and potential high maintenance cost because parts maybe a lot more expensive.
Out of the box suggestion.
Here's a nice Camry.

Yup, really bad ang ford focus. Best example is my dad-in-law's 2010 focus tdci AT. Talagang transmission ang problem and ford libis quoted 400k! Kaibigan pa nya mga Laus and regilar ang pms! He eventually sold it still with a broken tranny at 180k only. For a 6yr old car, he lost almost 80% value.
Side note: he still has the previous model explorer which is still strong despite a few glitches. Baka mas matibay mga SUV ng ford than their sedans?

Based on experience, I found midsize cars to be built tougher than compacts and subcompacts. They have better suspension and platforms. If you are looking at the usual oil change and filters, it will be around the same cost as with a compact plus just an additional liter of oil. Unless you have a broken engine or tranny or aircon or power steering system, then it will be expensive like a compact with a similar problem.
The usual compact with a small 1.6L engine would do around 7-8 km/L on hellish metro traffic. A midsize car with something like between 2.0L to 2.5L engines will do around 6-7 km/L, similar to gas CUVs (CRV, Forester, etc.).
An Accord or Camry or Mazda6 is more comfortable inside and quicker/faster than a Civic, Altis, or Mazda3. If you're willing to trade a bit of fuel expense for a better ride, then a midsize car is worth it.
mine's still runs well at 75k. and i have a very heavy foot. the PS tranny even shifts better than when it was new(never jerked on me). i reckon your folks didnt service the tranny well. sayang the tranny could have been repaired by specialist at below half of what he was quoted. And yes, I would avoid Libis for service at all costs.
Side Note: the PS tranny maintenance is not included in the regular PMS. Contrary to ford's belief that it doesn't need servicing.
