I think this is the perfect car for my sister. Sinasuggest ko kasi CRV pero mukhang mas maganda 'to.

The reason why they are not bringing in the escape is bec this ecosport will take the price range, a 1M 1.5L eco SuV, good luck na lang senyo. Kia already tried that route, and look where they ended up at 900k 1.6L bare soul.

According to the President of Ford Philippines, they will launch the new Escape after the EcoSport has gained some footing in the market.
Unlike the C-segment Escape which has already been established, the EcoSport is new to the region.

It's normal for people to cross shop with another vehicle in the next segment.
It doesn't necessarily mean the B-segment EcoSport will be in the same price range of a C-segment SUV (usually between P1M for the bare model to P1.6M), but its normal for the top of the line model to sometimes overlap with the base model of the next segment.
For example, the top of the line B-segment P824K Vios 1.5G AT overlaps with the base C-segment Corolla Altis 1.6E MT which costs P814K.

Expect the EcoSport to cost more than the equivalent Fiesta model.
In China, the EcoSport's pricing is actually closer to the Fiesta, than the Focus 1.6 models.

I think its the only way they could have put a full-size spare tire and not eat up the cargo space, at the same time this gives it a lower loading height (lower cargo floor).

My fearless forecast is that this will flop.

Personally, it looks awful, with the same snubbed nose as the APV. It also looks too tall for its width. I don't think Filipino buyers will even consider this to be in the same league as other CUVs such as the Sportage or even the tiny ASX.

Buyers in the Philippine market often buy SUVs because of their on-road presence, their space, or their ground clearance. The Eco-Sport only has the ground clearance. Despite being taller than the XV, it manages to look less menacing and more awkward.

If they price it at around 800k-1M, it will fit squarely with the likes of the SX4 and Soul, which are niche market cars at best.

Unlike the Fiesta and Ranger, which were runaway successes before they were even launched locally, the Ecosport is more of a lukewarm car.

If the Focus, which looks good, is loaded with features, and was backed by very heavy marketing, failed to generate class-leading sales, what more this awkward looking pseudo-SUV?

Not sure about being snubbed nose, I don't see any similarities with the APV.

Actually, its width is greater than its height.

    Width: 1765 mm / 69.5 in
    Height: 1696 mm / 66.8 in
Not as bad as a Jimny (width: 1600 mm, height: 1705 mm).

They shouldn't because it isn't, its a segment lower.
The EcoSport is a B-segment crossover based on the platform of the Fiesta. The Sportage and ASX are C-segment crossovers.

This is like comparing a B-segment Vios to the C-segment Civic and Elantra.

That's exactly where it will be positioned. Its a B-segment crossover that will be priced less than the larger C-segment crossovers.

Only the top of the line P1.2M 2.0 Focus models are class leading, not the 1.6 liter models which should normally be the volume seller of the range.
My guess is Ford will eventually have to add more content or lower the prices of the 1.6 models.

It's not that the hood's short per se, but the way the a-pillar flows into the front quarter panel makes it look awkward from most angles, in my opinion.

Again, it's not about the objective dimensions per se, but how it looks like in execution. The Jimny, despite being a wobbly bugger, looks good because of its squared off lines and macho stance. Again, to me, this Ecosport looks awkward.

But buyers don't exactly stick to particular segments. We always have people comparing the City 1.5E with the Altis 1.6G, because their prices are close. More importantly though, my hunch is that the Philippine market isn't ready for a B-segment SUV. Again, on-road presence, space, and clearance. Perhaps price can do something to augment this, but then we'll be having shoppers questioning if they really need the added height of an EcoSport in exchange for the svelte and well-accepted design of the Altis/Elantra/Lancer.

Ultimately, much of my lack of faith for the EcoSport rests on its awkward appearance. It may be just be me, and the rest of the Filipino market might like the looks. I've asked everyone in our household though about their opinion on the car, with my brother even opining that the Avanza looked better than the EcoSport.

I'm not Ford-bashing or anything, they've been making great cars these past few years after all; just really giving my unbiased opinion on this car.

if Ford makes a lower variant that cost slightly below 800k (say 789k) then it will be a hit :D

then if this becomes a hit... expect TMPI to bring here the Toyota Rush

And let's just all hope that the Ford dealers won't become greedy when selling the EcoSport para hindi ma-turn off mga customers.

Also, just read in the kotse.com article that the EcoSport is 57mm wider than the Explorer?

No, they must have used the width which included the mirrors.
The EcoSport's width minus the mirrors (overall body width) is 1765 mm (69.5 in), this makes it wider than a Fiesta, but narrower than a Focus.

I just read the article out of curiosity, looks like the guys at kotse.com didn't double check their info. :D

The first thing i'd do when I come across something as impossible sounding as that is confirm if the width is "with mirrors" or "without mirrors", what we usually see on brochures and roadtest data panels in car magazines is "width without mirrors". :D

I hope they have a low end variant with less or no chrome garnish at all.

You mean the chrome grill accents and fog light trim?

I'm not sure which models they'll sell here but more or less this is how the middle trim level looks like.
It has no fog light chrome trim....

The base model (Ambiente?) loses all chrome trim and fog lights, has steel wheels and black side mirrors and door handles.

PS: Chinese spec EcoSport shown above, ASEAN trim will probably be similar.
I still haven't seen the official photos of the lower trim models of the Indian and Euro spec EcoSport.
