April 18th, 2009 04:41 PM #5Muscovado is pure, unrefined, non-centrifugal cane sugar. It is also called 'poor peoples sugar. Muscovado retains all of the natural ingredients of sugar cane making it an unrefined sweetener. Although commonly used in Latin America and Southeast Asia, these products are relatively difficult to find in the US.
Many people compare muscovado to brown sugar, and while there are similarities in its flavor and use, they are two totally different products. Natural sugar, such as Muscovado, still contains the original components of the raw sugar cane plant while brown sugar is made from refined white sugar with a small amount of molasses added to it.
Muscovado is a type of unrefined brown sugar with a strong molasses flavour.
Also known as "Barbados sugar" or "moist sugar," it is very dark brown and slightly coarser and stickier than most brown sugars. Unlike most other brown sugars, which are made by adding molasses to refined white sugar, muscovado takes its flavor and color from its source, sugarcane juice. It offers good resistance to high temperatures and has a reasonably long shelf life. This unrefined sugar goes well with coffee and other beverages, and was one of the most prominent export commodities of the Philippines, especially from the Negros region from the 1800s until the late 1970s.[1] It is commonly used in baking recipes and making whiskey.

Yung panocha bilog na buo. When I got really addicted to sago gulaman, I'd buy panocha from the wet market, melt it and add vanilla flavoring.
Yung muscovado parang brown sugar din pero mas coarse. I'm surprised that it's called poor man's sugar when it's pricier than white and brown sugar. I live with seniors and their doctors recommend muscovado over regular sugar or splenda.Last edited by _Cathy_; April 18th, 2009 at 05:44 PM.

kasi ang muscovado is the sugar na nakagisnan na ng mga ninuno natin. no added colorings and additives . just pure directly came from sugarcane. panutsa or sinuklob (yung mukhang peluka na pinag taklob) is also considered as raw sugar, yun nga lang sa sobra raw niya is kailangan salain para mawala ang ibang impurities.
when you like the natural sweetness, go for muscovado and / or brown sugar. for pure sweetness there are white or refined as well as the so called washed or the artificial one.
parang mineral at synthetic oils ito ah :twak:Last edited by XTO; April 18th, 2009 at 10:41 PM.
